I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book -
especially if I based myself on the cover. However, what
followed was an absolutely delightful, at times cringe
worthy (can you say oopps? imagine your most embarassing
moment on YouTube for the world to see) and hilarious novel.
The main character and newest YouTube sensation is MacKenzie
Wellesley who has always managed to stay out of the
spotlight - somebody who knows to keep herself out of
trouble - until that unfortunately incident - involving a
football player and CPR.
Interestingly, as I read this novel, I found myself at times
laughing, cringing (so happy it was NOT me) and cheering for
MacKenzie.
While this story is delightful, it is also about sending a
message - that you are okay just the way you are - the good
points as well as those that need work.
I loved the way Mackenzie discovers things about herself
along the way and becomes highly of just how fickle high
school can be.
I loved cheering her on and kept thinking "let it go" and
just keep moving ahead.
Its a bit hard to review this book without giving too much
of it away, but suffice it to say that I loved it and would
definitely recommend AWKWARD to any YA (or adult) looking
for a feel good read.
Mackenzie Wellesley has spent her life avoiding the
spotlight. At Smith High, she's the awkward junior people
only notice when they need help with homework. Until she
sends a burly football player flying with her massive
backpack and makes a disastrous-not to mention
unwelcome-attempt at CPR.
Before the day is out, the whole fiasco explodes on YouTube.
And then the strangest thing happens. Suddenly, Mackenzie is
an Internet sensation, with four million hits and counting.
Sucked into a whirlwind of rock stars, paparazzi, and free
designer clothes, she even catches the eye of the most
popular guy at school. And that's when life gets really
interesting...
