Keri Doherty has always been someone who is prepared for any
type of emergency. She has first aid kits and escape plans
to handle just about any situation. However, she was far
from prepared when, at 17 years old, she found her older
brother, Jake, dead by his own hand. She and her family are
still working through all of the pain that this has brought
about when Keri's childhood friend, Janna van der Zaag,
comes to her with a disturbing theory. Janna's oldest
brother had also committed suicide years ago. Then she met
someone else, Sione Filese, who also lost a brother to
suicide a year ago. They started comparing things and found
that there were some startling similarities in the deaths of
all three boys.
For one thing, all of the boys were the oldest sibling in
their family. One boy dies each year. Last of all, each boy
had spent the previous New Year's Eve in the beautiful
resort town of Summerton. There are just too many
similarities in the way each of these boys died. Janna and
Sione have decided that these boys were somehow murdered.
However, there's no actual proof and the authorities would
laugh at them.
Janna and Keri actually Live in Summerton year round. They
think that their town is nice and an enjoyable place to
live. Tourists coming into the town, though, act as if
they're in some sort of magical location, and they keep
coming back. Sione also is under the spell of this gorgeous
city by the sea and the girls just don't get it.
At any rate, they decide to investigate these deaths a bit
more closely and find even more astonishing facts. In all
the years that any of them can remember, it's never rained
on New Year's Eve in Summerton, even when the weather
reports are calling for it. Yes, this is the place you want
to be on New Year's Eve unless, of course, you happen to be
the oldest brother in a family.
Clues start to lead the three in the direction of certain
long time and important members of the Summerton community.
It can't be true because all of these people are well-
respected and, for the most part, well-liked. Things are
becoming clearer to Keri, Janna and Sione, but they can't
believe what they're finding.
As they get closer and closer to solving this mystery, they
find their own lives in danger. Not only that, they'll be
turning on each other before it's over with, which can cause
none of them to make it out of this alive.
Karen Healey, the author of THE SHATTERING, was born in New
Zealand and lives in Australia. This book is set in New
Zealand, so you're going to find out a lot of things about
this country if you don't know anything about it. The plot
grabs you from the first page and keeps you in its grasp
until the end. It's a bit of a nerve "shattering" book that
will keep you on the edge of your seat. Even though it's
geared toward young adults, older people will also enjoy the
story.
Seventeen-year-old Keri likes to plan for every possibility.
She knows what to do if you break an arm, or get caught in
an earthquake or fire. But she wasn't prepared for her
brother's suicide, and his death has left her shattered with
grief. When her childhood friend Janna tells her it was
murder, not suicide, Keri wants to believe her. After all,
Janna's brother died under similar circumstances years ago,
and Janna insists a visiting tourist, Sione, who also lost a
brother to apparent suicide that year, has helped her find
some answers.
As the three dig deeper, disturbing facts begin to pile up:
one boy killed every year; all older brothers; all had spent
New Year's Eve in the idyllic town of Summerton. But when
their search for the serial killer takes an unexpected turn,
suspicion is cast on those they trust the most.
As secrets shatter around them, can they save the next
victim? Or will they become victims themselves?
