Horror

All the men on board the fishing ship, the Borealis, wanted was to make a good haul to take back home so they could pay bills and care for their families. Artic fishing can get really cold and the men were becoming impatient when, after a full week, they were still coming up empty. Then everything changed. On the 8th morning, they pulled up a haul of crabs that set up a cheer among all of the fishermen. This might just turn into a being a great trip after all.

One of the old timers, Charlie, had decided that this would be his last trip out. His wife had left him because he was gone all the time and had taken his son with her. He wanted to have time to search for the two of them and he knew that wasn't going to happen unless he was on land a lot more often. Yes, Charlie had plans and he was talking these over with the captain of the ship, Mike, when they both spotted something extremely odd on the ice covered territory they were facing.

It became clear with upon closer inspection that it was a naked young woman. Charlie and Mike went into action and called up Joe, Bryan and Billy to help. After performing a somewhat daring rescue, Charlie got the girl on board and Sammy, another crew member, started giving her CPR because she wasn't breathing. He managed to get her breathing again, but he couldn't get away from her fast enough afterward.

They got the girl dressed and some food into her before asking her such questions as her name and how she came to be out there on that barren wasteland of ice. She acted odd and didn't seem to have any answers for them. From that moment on, everything went downhill.

There was sickness and death and madness where everything had been normal before. Something is wrong about this girl. Charlie doesn't know how or why, but he does know that this odd girl is the reason that crew members are suddenly dying, becoming sick or losing their minds. But as he starts to realize that what they brought aboard the ship is pure evil, he also understands that there's little he can do to stop it.

BOREALIS is one of the most brutal and frightening novellas you're likely to read. It will also have you scratching your head in wonderment as to exactly what's going on. Ronald Malfi takes you on a ride you'll remember long after you've read that final sentence.
