There's a Shoe Murderer on the loose in New York City. Two
young ladies have been found murdered with a high-heeled
stiletto designer shoe. Both young ladies were employees of
Emily Levine, the owner of Emily's Place, an upscale,
discount, shoe boutique on the Upper West Side of
Manhattan. Emily's customers are a diverse lot, ranging
from the very wealthy to prostitutes, homosexuals,
transvestites and transgenders. But Emily's Place is more
than just a shoe store; it's a place where people can come
and bring their troubles and find a caring, compassionate
person to listen to their woes.
Emily hasn't always run a shoe store, although her father
did all his life; however, she has always had a passion for
shoes. Her PhD in English led her to a teaching career at
several colleges, but she finds complete fulfillment and
joy in owning and running her store. This new career path
came about three years ago when she left her lawyer husband
(and his girlfriend) and decided to make her own way by
herself.
Detective Paul Murphy is assigned to the murder cases and
Emily is attracted to him. She describes herself as
a "woman of a certain age" and considers Paul the same. She
can't decide if he is as attracted to her. His demeanor
about the case really angers her at times. Could that be
because Emily is determined to solve these murders herself
and keeps trying to tell him who he should be
investigating? Emily finds it increasingly difficult to
forget about murder, motives and Murphy. Will they ever
find this person who uses the tag line "Goodie One Shoes"
in e-mails?
GOODIE ONE SHOES is a debut novel by Roz Siegel,
although she has had extensive writing experience. That
experience certainly shows in this delightful cozy mystery
with quirky, colorful characters. The book is billed as An
Emily's Place Mystery, so I hope there will be more stories
to come. This is a real treat for all you shoe-lovers out
there. I was taken in instantly with the opening lines.
Each chapter also begins with an excerpt on shoe history
that is definitely charming. Don't miss out on this one!
A Jimmy Choo Sandal. A Manolo Blahnik mule; a Sergio Rossi
slide, a Prada sliver-heeled boot. As magic as Cinderella's
glass slipper. Even when they don't fit, they can determine
your life - or end it.
Emily knows these things because she owns a discount shoe
store on the colorful Upper West Side of Manhattan -
Emily's Place, a neighborhood hangout for shoe lovers,
where customers could find a sympathetic ear, a hot
cup of coffee and the perfect shoe.
Unfortunately, someone has decided that a sexy stiletto-
heeled shoe is an excellent murder weapon. A member of the
Emily's Place "family" - the staff of women who run the
store and love the shoes in it - is murdered with a red
Jimmy Choo high-heeled shoe - sharp as an ice pick, the
spiked heel is embedded in her head.
Emily is still reeling from the shock of her friend's
murder when a bag is shoved through her mail slot
containing the mate to the shoe that was the murder weapon.
Emily realizes that her store and everyone connected to it
is a target and that a psycho killer is stalking them all.
In fact the killer seems to particularly want Emily to
suffer. She insists on working with the detective assigned
to the case, Paul Murphy to find the killer - and she will
do whatever it takes. It's personal.
