When Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin,
better known as the Domestic Equalizers, meet their
favorite Country and Western singer, Darla Denman,
it's "Katy, bar the door." Darla hasn't been on the scene
in several years, and invariably the first thing her fans
say to her is..."I thought you were dead." Darla and her
entourage -- her ex-husband Big Bob Denman and his acerbic
mouthed wife, Roxie Jo; Roxie's make-up artist, Valetta
Rose; two back-up singers and three band members -- find
themselves stranded in Salt Lick, Texas with no money to
fix their broken down "tour bus". They are on their way
to Midland to perform on a telethon that hopefully will
jump-start Darla's come back. The back-up singers decide
to catch a ride back to Nashville, and this is where Debbie
Sue and Edwina enter the picture. Darla asks them to help
her out by going with her to Midland and lip sync the songs
she will be singing.
Obnoxious Roxie Jo never met a person she didn't insult, so
it is no wonder that on the night of the telethon, she is
murdered with a nail file. Darla found the body and
checked for a pulse -- when the police arrive she is holding
the bloody nail file and in a total state of shock. Darla
even admits to doing the foul deed. Our dynamic duo know
this isn't true and realize it is their job to prove their
idol's innocence.
Another good time is spent with the good citizens of Salt
Lick, Texas in Dixie Cash's I CAN'T MAKE YOU LOVE ME, BUT I
CAN MAKE YOU LEAVE. It's always a hoot trying to keep up
with Debbie Sue and Edwina, and next to impossible to
second guess those gals. If you enjoy books that are both
fun and funny, this series was written with you in mind.
Darla Denman, the former Queen of Country Music, has
trouble on her hands. First, her career ain't what it used
to be - she's gone from big arenas to run-down bars and
first-class jets to fourth-class buses. Second, that
fourth-class bus has plum stopped working just outside of
Salt Lick, Texas, and sure enough, there's barely enough
money to fix it. Third, someone has gone and murdered
Roxie Jo Jenkins, her ex-husband's new wife and her
current pain-in-the-you-know-where opening act.
Now Domestic Equalizers Debbie Sue and Edwina are on the
case. These two best friends, hair dressers turned private
eyes, are determined to help the singer they idolize while
staying out of heap of trouble they normally find
themelves in (and can't you just hear their put-down
husbands laughing at that?).
