Paranormal

For the past year, Gavyn Donatti has been assisting his ancestor Ian to kill Morai. It is less a calling than a necessity, as the entire group of Snake Heads have targeted not only the Djinn Ian, but Gavyn and his family for death. Dealing with powers he can barely handle with little-to-no instruction from his esteemed ancestor, Gavyn has stumbled along doing his best to stay alive and keep Ian breathing as well. But what if all the Morai are not evil? What if some of them have repented their snaky ways and are good at heart? That would make him a murderer, and although he has a shady past as a thief, murder crosses a line he will not break.

After a scrying leads them to the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, they find more they bargained for, an evil conclave of the snakeheads and their human followers hiding behind a fence as if they are just another privately- gathered disaffected militia. This is far from anything their guerrilla strikes can handle, Gavyn and Ian must withdraw until they can learn more about the group, why the humans have Morai powers, and determine a strategy that can eliminate any threat.

With strong elements of humor lightening the dark elements of the plot, Sonya Bateman has created a gory, suspenseful urban fantasy series with an unusual twist. In book two of the Gavyn Donatti series, MASTER AND APPRENTICE builds on the story of Master of None, answering some of the questions raised, revealing truths that change the entire complexion of Ian's goals and raising a few new questions. It's a thrilling page-turner, and I am eager to read book three.

SUMMARY

A DEADLY CULT. AN UNBREAKABLE CURSE. THE RULES ARE SIMPLE: LEARN TO KILL . . . OR DIE.

Luck has never been on Gavyn Donatti’s side. Anyone else with magic abilities inherited from a distant genie relative would have it made, but not Donatti, descendant of a cranky, shape-shifting genie named Ian. The prince of a murdered kingdom, consumed with revenge and driven by an unbreakable curse, Ian is determined to hunt down and destroy every last one of his enemies in the power-hungry snake clan—at any cost, including his life. Or Donatti’s.

Obsessed by his own rage, Ian has never really taught Donatti how to use his abilities. So when a powerful cult of magic-users captures Ian’s wife, the princess Akila, and then Ian himself, Donatti is left alone to take on dozens of half-djinn and their mysterious leader with designs on world domination.

Facing an impossible mission, Donatti is forced to turn to an enemy for help—one who claims to know how to unlock his true potential. Trusting a snake might be the last mistake Donatti ever makes—but if he doesn’t learn to wield the power inside him, everyone will pay the ultimate price.
