Millie Hogan is tired of her mom and aunts trying to marry
her off. The latest victim is David Denvers, a dentist who
has returned to Deer Park to take over his father's
practice. Millie just wants to go to Hollywood and become
an actress. It's always been her dream, but life keeps
getting in the way and her dream has yet to become reality.
David lost his wife five years ago and is raising an 11-
year-old son. His mother is meddling in his life as she
tries to get him and Cynthia Shivley, recently divorced and
returning to Deer Park also, to hook up with each other.
Cynthia is actually stalking David, appearing everywhere he
goes. He is not interested in her.
Millie and David devise a scheme whereby they appear to be
dating and getting serious about each other. They try to
keep everything casual and even set a time for their big
break-up. They find this un-dating, as they call it, is
actually working out quite well. They are very relaxed with
each other and feel no pressure.
Meanwhile, Millie and her mom help Bart, David's son, build
his box sled for the big Winterfest race. Eva, Millie's
mom, holds the fastest time ever recorded in this race. She
shares her secrets with Bart, telling him her strategy for
being a winner. This quality time that Millie, David, Bart
and Eva spend together begins to draw them closer to each
other, especially Millie and David.
As race day and their break-up day approaches, Millie
begins to have some serious feelings for David, which
really scares her. David likewise is feeling more than just
a friendship with Millie. Their plan has worked for getting
their mothers off their backs and getting Cynthia to leave
David alone, but will the plan backfire on them? Can they
just walk away and be friends?
Kim O'Brien gives us a delightful story that deals
with letting others direct your life and shatter your
dreams. It's a story about starting over and rebuilding a
new life. Wisdom and inspiration is shared by many of the
characters about having faith and trust in God. The story's
ending is quite a surprise. Will Millie's dream be
fulfilled after all? I laughed and cried through the book
and really enjoyed the story. You should too!
It Was a Relationship of Convenience. . .Until It Became a
Romance Millie Hogan and David Denvers both have big
problems in small town Deer Park, South Dakota. Millie—a
waitress with designs on Hollywood—has a mother who keeps
setting her up on disastrous blind dates, even though
Millie’s never met a man she could trust. David—a widowed
dentist with an almost-teenaged son and opinionated
parents—is being stalked by an amorous former patient. So
when a lost filling lands Millie in David’s office, the two
of them cook up a plan—a fake relationship. No one gets
hurt, and no one gets nagged. It’s a great plan—until they
really start to care. Now what will they do? Turns out, it
probably doesn’t matter: when Millie learns a shocking
family secret she wonders if she’s really wife material.
Maybe it’s best to stick with the plan and head for
Hollywood. And since David’s folks think Millie’s all wrong
for him, well. . .he realizes he may have to let her go.
Isn’t that what you do when you love someone?
