Charley Davidson's official job title was private
investigator. When she wasn't dealing with the usual
domestic disputes, she also helped her Uncle Bob with the
Albuquerque police department as a consultant. Charley had
been helping her uncle since she was five years old. That's
when she first discovered she was the grim reaper, a human
portal that helps earth bound spirits cross over to the
other side.
Charley had long given up talking about her gift. But to
Charley dealing with the dearly departed was just another
day on the job -- a job that usually followed her home.
First there was Mr. Wong, a mysterious spirit who hovered
in a corner in Charley's living room. Charley usually
placed a piece of furniture in front of him to avoid seeing
him. Then there was Mr. Habersham, the annoying ghost next
door who had a knack for showing up when Charley was in the
shower. But Mr. Wong and Mr. Habersham were what Charley
considered typical earth bound spirits. Charley's gift,
however, also attracted the attention of two other spirits
who weren't so easily tamed.
Charley nicknamed the dark, blurry spirit who appeared when
she was in danger, the Big Bad. Charley figured he was a
bad spirit since his appearance usually resulted in someone
having their spinal cord ripped out of them. Charley was
also visited by a ghost she called Reyes. Reyes was a
tougher case for Charley to crack. Other than his ability
to leave her frozen in desire, Charley knew nothing about
him. Other ghosts claimed not to see him, but his speed and
manner of materializing clearly proved he was not human.
Charley's fascination with Reyes has to take a backseat
when three attorneys are murdered and one of them shows up
at Charley's apartment. Along with her uncle Bob, Charley
uses her ability to personally interview the deceased in
order to get to the bottom of the murders. But Charley's
gift may not be enough when her own life is suddenly in
danger. Thankfully, Reyes and the Big Bad have her back. If
only she could figure out who or what they are.
If you like your paranormal reads with a big dose of humor,
FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT will probably become your favorite
book. This is hands down the most hilarious paranormal
novel I have read so far. Even if the paranormal is not
your cup of tea, this book is funny enough to keep you
laughing from cover to cover. Not only is this book funny,
but there is plenty of mystery to keep you on the edge of
your seat. FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT is the first book of an
impressive new paranormal series by the very talented
writer, Darynda Jones. If you love this novel, don't miss
the sequels - Second Grave on the Left and Third
Grave Ahead .
A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice.
Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.
This is a thrilling debut novel from an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.
