Jayleia Durante was whisked away in the middle of a horde of
infected creatures by a man she has little reason to trust.
The last time they met, he was commandeering the ship she
and her best friend were on, and this time he seems to be
commandeering her person in some kind of political maneuver.
Her government and his have an uneasy truce and with her
father (the recently deposed leader of the government) in
hiding she holds the keys to the spy network.
Major Damon Sindrivik is ordered to capture the daughter of
a traitor and find out all she knows, no matter the cost to
his heart, or hers. It's not all bad, though; he has been
highly trained in the art of extracting information via
kindness and seduction and he's had a yen for her since the
first time they met. Besides, more important than either of
their lives is the war with the insectile Chekydren and what
she knows may make the difference between survival and the
annihilation of the humanoid galaxy.
Marcella Burnard has written one of the better science
fiction romances, full of intriguing elements and futuristic
conjecture. She has been able to juggle all the disparate
threads of the story without losing sight of the solid
relationship between the two main characters and while
building tension on at least three fronts. Although Berkley
has marketed ENEMY GAMES as Futuristic Romance I would be
equally inclined to list it under straight Science Fiction.
It reminds me a great deal of books written in the Sassinak
series and even Bujold's Vorkosigan series. A solid,
satisfying read, ENEMY GAMES is the second book in Burnard's
series following the bestselling Enemy Within.
Kidnapped while combating a devastating plague, Jayleia
Durante fights to resist the attractive Major Damen
Sindrivik, an officer from a rival government’s spy corps.
But with her spymaster father missing, and mercenaries hot
on her trail, Jayleia must join forces with the magnetic,
charming and manipulative spy. She must see past her
desire and remember that his single-minded agenda is for
the protection of the empire - not her or her people.
Damen knows a shadowy network of traitors has allied with
the violent Chekydran, and that Jayleia’s father holds the
key to dismantling that web. She becomes his only lead in
a circuitous round of hide and seek and despite their
opposing sides, he can’t resist her. Too bad his instincts
tell him Jayleia is lying to him.
Now Jayleia and Damen must find the love to match their
passion and end the war or they’ll become the prey of the
traitors they stalk, and one species’ civil war will
consume the galaxy.
