Despite being a centuries-old vampire, Eleisha has decided
to give up taking human life. The old laws of her people
dictated a policy of feeding without killing, and Eleisha
is determined to bring the old ways back. To this end, she
has gathered a tight group around her; two other vampires,
a telepathic human and a ghost; together they set out to
locate and "educate" any stray vampires they can find.
There is one ancient vampire who has no intention of
letting Eleisha succeed in her work -- her maker, Julian.
Despite Julian's interference, the group manages to locate
Simone Stratford a "flapper-style" vampire living and
hunting in Denver.
Damaged by family cruelty and betrayal while she was human,
Simone enjoys playing with her prey before finally
destroying them completely. When she meets Eleisha and
Philip, Simone decides human prey is insufficient and goes
after the two vampires with a vengeance. Simone convinces
them she is partial to their cause while secretly planning
their destruction. Eleisha is taken in but Philip, being a
hunter himself, is only too aware of Simone's game. Despite
Philip's knowledge of Simone's endgame, he still finds
himself falling into her world, even though it may cost him
all he has come to love and value. For Eleisha, the stakes
(although she doesn't realize it) will be much higher...her
very existence is threatened.
Regardless of what I felt was a somewhat choppy narrative,
I found MEMORIES OF ENVY to be a real page-turner. The
characters really came to life for me. The villain of the
piece has a great backstory that was fully fleshed out. And
I love the henchmen/minions of the main arc villain; I hope
they're around for many books to come.
For a vampire, killing is easy. She makes it fun...
A reluctant predator, Eleisha Clevon has made home for
herself and other vampires like her in Portland. And, in
spite of the risks, she is determined to locate all vampires
still existing in isolation, so she might offer them
sanctuary — and more importantly, so she can teach them to
feed without killing.
To Eleisha's shock, she learns that a lost vampire may be
living as close as Denver, Colorado... but she has to
approach this one more carefully than ever before.
Simone Stratford is a beautiful, delicate-looking creature
from the roaring twenties who enjoys playing elaborate games
with mortals, stoking their passion for her before finally
draining them of their blood.
When Eleisha and her protector, Philip Branté, go to Denver
in search of Simone, what they find is far worse — and more
seductive — than either one bargained for. Philip’s love for
Eleisha and his ability to fit into her world are pushed to
the breaking point, as is Eleisha’s fierce belief in her own
mission.
