Sammy Greene, the tough-talking, Yiddish-spewing, hardnosed
radio host, is not necessarily the most beloved face on
Ellsford's campus. She is akin to a pit bull, or an enraged
terrier, refusing to release even the most tenuous lead.
In DEAD AIR, Sammy has to decide if such a line exists
as "enough." Is she willing to risk her life and the lives
of her colleagues in hunting down strange events on campus,
specifically the strange event that led to the death of a
professor whose body she discovered...and whose death
everyone labels a suicide? When she realizes several
students have suspiciously vanished, not even Gus
Pappajohn, campus police chief, can stand in her way. Sammy
starts to suspect everyone: Pappajohn, Reed Wyndham, her on-
again-off-again boyfriend in the medical department, and
anyone who ever had contact with lab monkeys, missing
students, or the supposedly cursed "Ellsford Award." While
attempting to discover the background of the
disappearances, Sammy works to develop the best radio show
of her life, hoping it won't be her last.
Excellently written, DEAD AIR ratchets up the suspense from
scene-to-scene with twists and turns beyond the usual
medical or campus mystery.
Talk is cheap, but when this radio host takes action, she
may pay the ultimate price. An outspoken, brash, native
New Yorker, Sammy Greene isn't afraid to ruffle a few
feathers at Ellsford University, her ultraconservative New
England college. Host of "The Hot Line", a talk-radio show
on campus station WELL, Sammy tackles the toughest, most
controversial issues facing Ellsford's students. When
Sammy discovers the body of Dr. Burton Conrad, one of
Ellsford's most esteemed professors, her journalistic
drive kicks in and she sets out to discover what happened
to the beloved professor. But when several Ellsford
students mysteriously disappear, Sammy realizes she's
uncovered the seamy, terrifying underbelly of this
prestigious institute of higher education. With the entire
campus in peril, and demons from her past close behind,
Sammy Greene must race to find answers. Along the way,
she'll discover some unlikely allies-and even more
unlikely enemies. If Sammy isn't careful, someone is going
to make sure that she signs off-for good.
