We get a hint into what drives Rachel Bailey to Reidsville
from the home of her protector Clinton Maddox by reading
between the lines in the very first chapter. What we fail to
acknowledge is how very sinister and real the threat. At
first glance Rachel has clearly settled into a rather
private life earning her way as a seamstress. Being private
in a small town is almost impossible and as a single
attractive woman it would seem she has caught the eye of
every eligible man including that of the sheriff Wyatt
Cooper. Oddly Wyatt doesn’t consider himself eligible having
taken himself off the marriage track with the untimely death
of his wife. But attracted to Rachel he definitely is - in
his words she was a pleasure to watch. And watch he does as
she gracefully skirts around him at any chance. Cat and
mouse game at its best. What Rachel is soon to learn is that
her protector has set in motion a way to hopefully keep her
out of harm’s way and that Wyatt plays a major role in these
plans. Thinking his heart insulated and protected against
ever falling in love again Wyatt entered into an agreement
that would protect his town and its citizens. The big
question is whether Rachel will follow the dictates of
Clinton Maddox. And at the crux of the matter is whether
she will learn to trust Wyatt with not only her safe keeping
but her heart. The relationship between Wyatt and Rachel is
anything but simple. But there is no denying the underlying
respect and developing love that makes them a couple to
reckon with. Nothing is as entertaining as their lively
banter as evidenced in one of the best lines in the book.
Wyatt “curiosity is my worst fault.†Rachel “who told you
that and how did they choose.†When the inevitable clash
between Rachel and her adversary occurs she has not only
Wyatt to turn to but the townspeople that have adopted her
as one of their own. But evil seems to know no bounds and it
will not stop short of destroying Rachel and if necessary
the town itself.

USA Today bestselling author Jo Goodman delivers a
thrilling tale of small town greed that may have big time
consequences—unless two strangers open their hearts to a
highly unconventional arrangement…
Rachel Bailey may seem like just
a beautiful newcomer to most of Reidsville, Colorado, but
Sheriff Wyatt Cooper knows she’s much more. Through a twist
of fate, Rachel is the inheritor of a very valuable
commodity: control of the railway that keeps the isolated
mining town connected to the world. That is, she will be, if
she agrees to the surprising stipulation in her benefactor’s
will—that she marry Wyatt.
Rachel has no choice: refusing
the marriage could put all of Reidsville in the hands of an
outsider—and not just any outsider, but the cruel tyrant she
has come here to escape. Yet living with Wyatt will be her
greatest challenge. For he has a tempting way about him that
makes Rachel forget theirs is a marriage in name only—until
her frightening past shows up to remind them exactly how
much they have at stake…
