Carlos Delgado works for a secret government agency called BAD. His team travels to all parts of the world on secret missions. Someone named Mirage has been sending messages about specific events related to a man named Durand Anguis to intelligence agencies. Based on this intel, Carlos takes his team to the French Alps to rescue a young woman. BAD is doing everything possible to find out who Mirage is, but Carlos has a personal interest due to the information about the Venezuelan Anguis family. Carlos is trying to bring down Durand Anguis.
The BAD agency gets a lead on Mirage's location, so Carlos accompanies a young agent to a house in Peachtree, Georgia. His timing couldn't be more perfect. Someone else has discovered Mirage's location. Carlos rescues a young woman named Gabrielle from a goon. After a soak in the lake and a high-speed chase, Carlos and Gabrielle are captured by an independent contractor who plans to make big bucks by turning Mirage over to Durand Anguis. The goon thinks Gabrielle knows who Mirage is.
Carlos manages to turn the tables on their captors, killing them. He takes Gabrielle to a safe house where his team interviews her. His boss arrives and gives Gabrielle an ultimatum. She admits to being Mirage. In a bid to bargain for her freedom, Gabrielle takes Carlos and his team to the private French school where young teenagers have disappeared. What they don't know is that a secret international group, called the Fratelli, is kidnapping young, highly intelligent women to be servants to the Fratelli.
Gabrielle has been in hiding for years after her ex-husband attempted to have her killed. Not having the luxury to trust more than a handful of people, Gabrielle reluctantly puts her trust in Carlos. Their situation is dire; her fear of being turned over to the authorities very real. Carlos may very well turn her over to the Feds himself, but Gabrielle can't help but fall in love with him. Carlos is fighting the same feelings. Gabrielle wants Durand Anguis to die for killing her mother; Carlos wants to get Anguis for personal reasons. He knows, though, that if Gabrielle discovers the reason, she will hate him.
Although this reader disagrees with a few "facts" in this story, WHISPERED LIES is full of political plotting by the Fratelli, who plan a series of events that could leave the United States in political ruin. Using the turmoil between the Venezuelan government and the United States, the story is set a few weeks prior to the presidential election. Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love combine their talents to write a blistering, mind-shocking tale about two people caught in the heart of monstrous acts. Carlos and Gabrielle's love survives the shock and BAD gets one step closer to discovering the identity of the Fratelli.
