Pureblood werewolf Gillian Maitland has struggled all her
life to live up to her domineering father's expectations
and demands, always hoping that some day he will look at
her with pride. But nothing she does ever pleases Sir
Averil, leaving her yearning for love and acceptance. Only
once does Gillian find the courage to defy her father, when
she goes to London during the Great War to volunteer at a
military hospital and meets a young soldier who captures
her heart. In an act of youthful rebellion, she gives the
soldier her innocence, only to discover soon after that the
soldier is part werewolf, and that she is now carrying his
child. Terrified of her own feelings and the repercussions
of her actions, Gillian abandons the soldier in London and
returns home to Snowfell to face her father's wrath.
Twelve years later, New York homicide detective
Ross Kavanaugh is still haunted by the memory of the sad,
beautiful girl he fell in love with in London, but his more
pressing concern is finding out who tried to frame him for
murder, costing him his job and his reputation. But then
Ross meets Toby, the son Gillian hid from him, after Toby
stows away on a ship from England and tracks Ross down
through the police station. When Gillian herself appears
at his doorstep looking for Toby, Ross battles all the long
buried feelings of passion that she invariably inspires,
while venting his anger and hatred at her betrayal.
But Toby is determined to get his parents back
together, and he manages to trick Ross into boarding the
ship Toby and Gillian are taking back to England, then
traps him in a storage compartment until the ship is out at
sea. Toby knows that his mother is miserably unhappy, and
that she has agreed to marry the werewolf of her father's
choosing upon their return to England, a man who will no
doubt resemble Sir Averil in his demanding and abusive
ways. Toby also believes that Ross is the only person with
the strength and courage to take a stand against Sir
Averil. But when the pureblood werewolves descend on
Snowfell for the Convocation which will decide Gillian's
fate, an unexpected murder leads to accusations and bitter
battles for control, with Gillian's, Toby's, and Ross's
very lives hanging in the balance.
COME THE NIGHT is an intriguing, intense story.
Gillian is a classic child of abuse, filled with self
loathing and lacking in self confidence, but with a will of
iron when it comes to the well-being of her son. Ross is
also beaten down by the negative perceptions of others,
which makes it difficult for him to fight for Gillian when
she has made it clear that only a full blooded werewolf is
acceptable in her father's, and therefore her, world.
Villains abound in this novel, although the arch villain is
horrifying on multiple levels. Toby is the one bright spot
in all the darkness, and it's for his sake that both
Gillian and Ross must fight to become their best selves,
and in so doing, earn each other's love.
And Gillian Maitland is to
marry a werewolf of her father's choosing-ensuring the
purity of their noble bloodline. Still, she can't forget
Ross Kavanaugh, the American whose forbidden touch
unleashed a passion she'd never known. And when Ross
returns unexpectedly to England, he's no longer the man she
remembers, but a hard-boiled ex-cop who harbors a dark
secret.
The discovery that they have a son makes Ross
even more determined to prove his worth to Gillian, despite
being merely a quarter werewolf. Then a mysterious spate of
murders casts him under a pall of suspicion, and torn
between duty and desire, Gillian knows she must drive Ross
away. Even as their hunger for each other grows by the hour?
