American beauty Sunshine "Sunny" Phillips has happily put
the city lights of Seattle behind her in favor of staying
on at her new brother-in-law's estate in the Scottish
Highlands. As the official clan healer and witch-in-
residence, Sunny would like to make the Highlands her
permanent home, but she needs a husband to make her dream
come true. Her dreams of a whirlwind romance, true love and
immigration haven't materialized yet, but Sunny lives for
the day. Content in her cottage, tending her garden and
visiting with her sister, Sunny has no worries...until the
night she answers a knock at the door and Robert Cameron
holds out his hand, pulling her into the 14th century.
Robert Francis Cameron mac Cameron has need of the MacLeod
witch. His own is dead, drowned by his people in the loch
some months past. Now his brother lies dying and Cameron
risks life and limb to find the MacLeod hag and "persuade"
her to come to his brother's aid. Although he doesn't
realize it, the MacLeod estate is riddled with
time "potholes" and the cottage door he knocks on opens in
another century. The witch isn't the crone he was
expecting, but Cam needs a healer and convinces Sunny to
leave with him despite his misgivings regarding her
outlandish clothing and the strange furnishings he sees
inside the cottage.
Not realizing at first that she's stepped through a gate to
the past, Sunny goes willingly with Cameron thinking he's
her escort to the MacLeod keep where she is expected for
dinner. When she realizes what has happened (time-travel is
nothing new to the people living on the estate), she
doesn't panic and accompanies Cameron to his hall where she
does her best to help his injured brother, who dies despite
her best efforts.
When the people of the keep, led by Cam's own cousin, try
to drown Sunny, Cam comes to her rescue. He saves her life
and keeps her close even though he knows he's obligated to
marry his brother's widow. Cameron tries to return Sunny to
her cottage, but the time gate refuses to open and she and
Cam are forced to stay together for awhile longer. When
Sunny finally returns to the present, without Cameron,
she's heartbroken. Although she knows 600 years stands
between them, she's grown to love the Highlander and can't
imagine a life that doesn't include him.
An experienced storyteller, Lynn Kurland keeps her
fans happily reading with one engaging story after another.
Long-time Kurland readers will welcome a return visit with
the time-traveling Highlanders and new readers won't have
any trouble easing into the series. Although part of a
series, WITH EVERY BREATH, like all her other Highlander
books, can be read as a stand-alone novel.
When medieval laird Robert Cameron pounds on Sunny
Phillips's door, he isn't paying a social call. He's
braved a trip onto enemy soil to fetch the MacLeod witch,
a crone renowned for her healing powers. But the woman who
opens her door to him is enchanting and young... and not
from his century.
