She's at it again! Helen Hawthorne's latest caper has her hitting the links although not exactly in the way in which she had imagined. Instead of riding in a golf cart sipping a freshly made mojito, she's sitting behind a desk fielding insults and sneers from the rich and somewhat notoriously famous members of the Golden Palms' Superior Club. Who knew that working with the upper echelon of society could be so nerve-wracking? Not Helen, that's for sure!
As if it weren't painful enough to be rubbing elbows with the plastic Barbie-doll types and the sleazy middle-aged men found at the club, Helen now has the dubious pleasure of serving up niceties to the one man she hoped never to see again...her ex-husband! Of course as luck would have it, he wound up marrying a wealthy older widow and enjoys the good life while Helen spends her days hoping to scrape together enough money to cover her rent. Where is the justice in this world? According to Helen, it's certainly not in Golden Palms, Florida.
Before the sun has time to set, Helen finds herself in a precarious position. After a minor altercation with her ex, she discovers that he is missing and she is a suspect. As if she really would have anything to do with the likes of him again. Too bad the cops don't seem to be convinced of her innocence.
And as if things couldn't get any worse, Helen is suddenly befriended by none other than her ex-husband's uber rich wife who wants to get to the bottom of this mess as badly as Helen does. Isn't there a rule somewhere saying that first and second wives aren't supposed to be on the same team? Then again, when has Helen ever played by the rules? Why start now especially when the prize proves her innocence.
CLUBBED TO DEATH is the seventh installment in Elaine Viet's comical yet quirky Dead-End Job Mystery series that aims to entertain as well as delight. From her zany characters to the laugh out-loud escapades only Viets could concoct, the precision of her game enables her to score the perfect hole in one.
Helen Hawthorne's latest dead-end job is in a country
club's complaint department, dealing with the gripes of the
rich and spoiled. Then Rob, her deadbeat ex-husband, sails
back into her life aboard the yacht of his new lady,
Marcellaβknown as the Black Widow for her string of dead
spouses. The next day Rob's reported missing. If the Black
Widow has such a murderous reputation, then why is Helen
led from the club in handcuffs?
When Marcella helps Helen get released, the two form an
uneasy alliance to find out what really happened. Helen's
barely begun digging when a club patron is discovered
beaten to death with a golf club βhis membership
permanently expired. Someone got more than a little teed
off and it's up to Helen to get to the truthβwithout
getting clubbed herself...
