"A humorous twist to the mermaid myth that's as believable as it is entertaining."

Romance | Fantasy

Fredericka Bimm, Fred to most everyone, is a mermaid unlike any other. Her mother is human, she can't swim with legs, she's allergic to shellfish, and she becomes seasick on boats. And she's having a rough couple of days.

Fred's a marine biologist at the New England Aquarium, and the fish in her tank are on a food strike (they want to listen to music by the Pet Shop Boys); there's a new scientist at the aquarium who's hot! hot! hot!, and a new intern who's a perky pain in the tail; her best friend Jonas (who works for Aveda corporation) is all over her about her split ends; she walks in on her parents having sex, her parents break the news that her dad isn't her biological dad (okay, that one she'd figured out on her own years ago!), and there's a new merman in town.

It turns out that Thomas, the new scientist at the aquarium, and Prince Artur, the visiting merman, are on the same mission. Someone is poisoning the Boston Harbor with human waste, and they need Fred's help in tracking down the source. Not only that, but both are seriously attracted to Fred, who is totally unimpressed (most of the time) with their masculine games of one-upmanship. Unfortunately, she doesn't have Jonas' shoulder to cry her troubles on because he has a serious crush on Fred's boss, Dr. Barb, and has shared his feelings with the woman and been rejected! Or so he thinks!

MaryJanice Davidson does for mermaids in SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES what she did for vampires in the Undead series -- adds her own special humorous twist to the myth and creates a world where you believe they could exist! Fred is so hilariously not the typical mermaid and the collection of odd-ball characters -- from comfortable with his sexuality, appletini swigging Jonas to mermaid enthusiast Thomas to uptight, white-coated older woman Dr. Barb -- will leave readers laughing out loud and wanting more. The storyline is entertaining, though I did feel the resolution came about rather abruptly. Even so, this is a most entertaining read, and fans of Ms. Davidson won't be disappointed!

SUMMARY

Fred is not your ordinary mermaid. She's not blonde. She's not buxom. And she's definitely not perky. In fact, Fred can be downright cranky. And it doesn't help matters that her hair is blue.

While volunteering at the New England Aquarium, Fred learns that there are weird levels of toxins in the local seawater. A gorgeous marine biologist wants her help investigating. So does her merperson ruler, the High Prince of the Black Sea. You'd think it would be easy for a mermaid to get to the bottom of things. Think again.
