Anna Walker can't catch a break—her surgically enhanced
boss (whom she lovingly calls "Nasty") won't stop yelling
at her for things she never did, her love life is
nonexistent and her therapy sessions aren't going so well.
Wracked with the guilt of her father's accidental death 20
years earlier, Anna can barely function on a day-to-day
basis. It isn't until she accidentally humiliates her boss
by claiming she's 90% plastic on the front page of New
York, New York that the winds seemingly change and Anna's
life is transformed overnight. After being a lowly
assistant for so many years, Anna is finally given her own
nightlife column, "The Velvet Rope Diaries." Too bad she
doesn't know anything about nightlife beyond feetsie
pajamas and falling asleep on the couch while watching the
Food Network!
Strapping on her favorite pair of Marc Jacobs, Anna grabs
her friends for a night out. Her assignment is to find the
newest, most exclusive chi-chi bar in town. However, her
destination had to have been previously undiscovered and
never written about in any publication. Period. Frustrated
and lost, Anna stumbles upon her new "deadline fairy
godmother" who tips her off about a brand new club—problem
solved! Well, that is until the bouncer at the door starts
yelling at her through a bullhorn, "LYMJ!" and bounces her
from the line. Ashamed of her "last year's Marc Jacobs,"
Anne manages to sneak in the back way and bumps into the
new love of her life, David Levy. Now if she can just
forgive herself for her father's death, all will be right
with the world...Right?
Taking a page straight out of Carrie Bradshaw's book,
Daniella Brodsky attempts to write a sexy account of
life in the city with bittersweet humor. However, the
formulaic plot reads like the literary equivalent of last
year's Marc Jacobs.
When Anna's private commentary regarding her boss's
penchant for plastic surgery accidentally goes public,
she's convinced her career is finished. Instead, Anna is
given the once-in-a-lifetime chance to write a New York
City nightlife column of her very own. The only problem is
that she has to figure out what's hotter than hot - and
fast.
What is most definitely hot is the sexy stranger who
sneaks Anna into a fabulous club - and plants the kiss of
the century on her lips. Now, ready or not, Anna's got a
career and social life that would make most scenesters
swoon. But soon Anna finds herself wondering if the most
desirable things in life truly are on the A-list.
