Sally King's dream evening, when she just knew her
boyfriend would ask her to marry him, turns into a
nightmare. Philip is found dead in his apartment with
another man (also dead), the apparent victim of a heart
attack during lurid lovemaking. Devastated, Sally can't
leave it alone. She knows Philip was not the man the police
and others are portraying him to be.
As Sally struggles to find her balance, Paris is in a
panic. The Nazis are approaching and most people are
fleeing. Sally, though, can't think beyond the fact that
Philip is dead and she must find out what happened.
Enlisting the help of her embassy, Sally's grief appeals to
Joe Hearst, a diplomat who would like to see her on the
first ship back to the States.
What Joe and Sally don't know is that their lives soon will
be just one thread in a complex woof and warp of cloth --
and they are crucial to keeping a deadly weapon out of Nazi
hands.
The plotting in this book is so complex that it is
difficult to summarize here. Numerous characters are
portrayed succinctly and eloquently so the reader knows
them after just a nodding acquaintance. This book is not
just sitting on a shelf for entertainment value. You'll
utilize the gray matter to follow the twists and turns of
Ms. Mathews multi-layered plotting. If it's not enough to
create terrific, 3D characters and an intriguing plot, the
setting alone notches the tension into the red. An
extremely well-done book that I highly recommend.
It’s the city’s most infamous after-hours haunt – a
glittering hotbed of deals and debaucheries.
The sordid death of Philip Stilwell sends shock waves
through the Alibi Club...for there’s much more to
Stilwell’s untimely end than a sex game gone wrong. His
murder and the desperate attempt to keep a deadly weapon
out of German hands will bring together the strands of a
twisted plot of betrayal, passion, and espionage – one
connected to the Alibi Club...and to the most explosive
secret of the war.
As the Nazis march on Paris and the crisis escalates, four
remarkable characters are swept into the maelstrom. Their
courage will change the course of history.
