Romance Suspense | Suspense

When Grace McKenzie's ex-fiancee, Steven Hatfield, is murdered, she is stunned to learn he has bequeathed her his art gallery in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Steven requested that Grace spends one week in New Hope before she refuses to accept his gift. Since she is on leave from her job as art curator of a Boston museum, she goes to New Hope at once to fulfill the stipulation, knowing she cannot accept the gallery, and will let it revert back into his estate. Once in New Hope, however, Grace is thrust into a twenty- year-old missing person's case, art forgery, blackmail, and buried secrets. She also finds a wonderful friend and a fantastic man.

FBI Special Agent Matthew Baxter takes a leave of absence from his job as a task force leader in antiterrorism to come home to New Hope and exonerate his father for Steven's murder. Fred Baxter was the chief of police in New Hope before his retirement, and the evidence against him just does not add up. The killer practically drew a map to Fred's door, and to Matt, it looks like a pretty sloppy frame-up. Matt needs to know about Steven and he contacts Grace for the information, and this is the start of a very nice friendship.

Christiane Heggan has done an excellent job of pacing, character development, and narrative in this skillfully conceived and expertly executed whodunit. Ms. Heggan has created likeable characters that are real, and a plot that is convincing. WHERE TRUTH LIES is a one-sitting, exciting read of greed, dark secrets, and murder, and just the right touch of romance.

WHERE TRUTH LIES is also Ms. Heggan's last novel, as she is going into the next phase of her life doing what she likes, when she likes, and this lady likes a lot of things! Travel, entertaining, and family all play a part in her future. Without a new Heggan book to look forward to in the future, I must resume my task of tracking down her out of print backlist! I will certainly miss Christiane Heggan, but I wish her well in all of her endeavors.

SUMMARY

Museum curator Grace McKenzie is shocked when she receives word that her ex-fiance, Steven Hatfield, has been murdered. In his will, Steven has left her his art gallery in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Anticipating that she would turn down the bequest, he asked that she spend a week at the gallery before making her final decision. Motivated by a sense of duty to a man she once loved, Grace agrees to go to New Hope for one week.

She isn't the only person drawn to the small town. FBI agent Matt Baxter has returned to his hometown for one reason only -- to clear his father of a bogus murder charge. While he and Grace seek answers, they discover that beneath the surface of this charming, peaceful town lies an old secret a few of its citizens would rather keep buried. And when their search takes an unexpected turn, they have only hours to find out where the truth lies -- or be buried with it.
