As a kid, my family always had pets. Dogs, cats, a goat, a pig, ducks we called
Salt and Pepper, a rabbit… you name it, I think we probably had it. Maybe that’s
why animals appear in all my books. It’s hard to imagine not having a pet of
some sort.
One particular dog stands out. Her name was Queenie, and she adopted us. I was
eight or nine years old, and one day while playing outside, this little black
and white dog trotted up to me. We later learned she was a purebred Boston
terrier, but that day she was just a dog that wanted to play. She didn’t have a
collar, and we’d never seen her around the neighborhood before, but she seemed
well-taken care of. Our dad said not to get attached to her as she obviously
belonged to someone. Ha! We were already attached to her.
We named her Queenie and as far as she was concerned, we kids (there were four
of us) belonged to her. If one of us got in trouble with our dad and got a stern
talking to, Queenie would go to a corner of the room, turn her back to him and
refuse to look at him for hours.
Months went by, and then one day, a car stopped in front of our house where we
were playing with Queenie. A man got out and said the dog was his, that she’d
been missing for several months. My dad talked to the man, asking him questions,
and finally decided the man was telling the truth. Tears fell down our faces as
the man bent to pick up Queenie to take her with him. But Queenie wasn’t having
it. She bit the man’s hand, then ran under the house. After some words with the
man, my dad and the man came to an agreement that we could buy Queenie from him.
So Queenie became ours for real.

My cat named Smokey. I adopted him from a lady who took in pets from people who could no longer care for the pet or just did not want the pet any longer. My favorite pet was a Siberian named Misha that my mother acquired from an owner that was afraid of her. From the moment my mom saw her, they had a mutual love. Misha was a pedigreed sled dog, who was very gentle and protective. Once a salesman came to the door and when mom said no, he attempted to enter the house. Misha came around the corner with her hackles raised. He took one look, stammered wolf and took off running leaving his sample kit on the doorstep. He never came back. This was a dog that allowed the little ones to ride her or sleep with their heads on her, but that day her snarls made us all grateful that she was there to protect us. My favorite cat was Tom Cruise. I was 11, so that was exactly 30 years ago. He was orange and white and he was a stray but not feral. I had several dogs growing up, each that I loved very much. My favorite pet(though I hate to say favorite) was my little Chihuahua, Tequila. My husband got her for me as a surprise when we were dating. She was my first pet that was mine. Not my parents, but all mine. I loved her to pieces and I took her everywhere. She was a spoiled little thing. I had her for 14 years and my kids grew up with her. She was their for all of their firsts and that makes her even more special. We had a "shoodle" a sheltie/poodle mix we called Mystique (Misty for short). She was 17 pounds soaking wet, had wavy hair that didn't shed. She lived a very full 17 years.
