I’ll just admit it upfront. I’m terrible about writing blog posts. But I do like to think I’m good at torturing my characters. So as I struggled to come up with a topic, the perfect solution dawned on me—I needed to interview one of them.

Meet Jessica Moore, the main character in my Miss Misery series. Jess is a misfit. She was booted from her magical training academy when she was eighteen for being too magically weird. She doesn’t fit in with the humans in her world, nor with the demon-like predators (aka, preds) who feed on human emotions. Although Jess just wanted to be a vigilante and protect innocent people, her life has gotten a lot more complicated by Book 4 (DARKEST MISERY).

We’re sitting down at The Lair, the bar owned by Jess’s satyr boyfriend, Lucen.

TM: So Jess, can you tell us what the best parts of being an urban fantasy heroine are?

Jess: The best parts? Are you *expletive deleted* me? I think the best part is that this series is almost over. Although I expect you’re going to kill me in Book 5 the way things are going. I didn’t sign up for this.

*passes Jess a shot of Jameson whiskey*

TM: Yeah, yeah. You’ve said that before. Look, no one sane signs up to be an urban fantasy heroine, but some good things must have come out of it. Can you try being cooperative for once?

*Jess mutters a few words that shouldn’t be repeated*

Jess: Fine. I admit that you’ve given me an awesome best friend. She’s willing to risk not just her neck, but her soul, for me on a regular basis.

TM: Plus she has great fashion sense.

Jess: So she claims. I think her penchant for wearing things like skull earrings is suspect.

TM: Fair enough. But she’s not the only good friend I gave you.

Jess: If you’re referring to Lucen, I consider him a bit more than a friend. Seems all that naked time puts him on a different level. But, uh, yeah. A sexy, badass satyr boyfriend counts for a lot when people are trying to kill me, especially when he’s one of the people I can count on to help me not get dead. Which is more than I can say for you, by the way.

TM: That’s not fair. The books would be boring if people weren’t trying to kill you. Besides, it’s not as if I left you unarmed and defenseless.

Jess: No, true. Being me does mean getting to play with cool weapons. You did give me those special knives that were forged in salamander fire, and occasionally I get a sword. That’s kind of fun. But still—people try to kill me! If survive, I want an all-expenses paid vacation somewhere nice with Lucen. How about Paris?

TM: Oh, don’t worry. France is in your future in Book 4. Anything else to add first?

Jess: Hmm. You let me wear leather pants occasionally. That’s a plus. I mean, who doesn’t want an excuse to wear leather pants?

TM: If you’ll recall, those were supposed to be a joke.

Jess: Who cares? I look good in them. These last books need less death and destruction and more leather pants. How about some for Lucen too?

TM: No.

Jess: You really do make me miserable.

*Jess grumbles and stalks off with the whiskey bottle*

About Tracey Martin

Earning a doctorate in psychology convinced Tracey Martin that imaginary people were way more fun than real ones. Plus, they make better minions. From this revelation an obsession was born, and she’s been writing stories of kick-ass girls and women (and the guys who deserve them) ever since.

She loves fantasy and SF, likes her music epic, and prefers her movies to contain explosions. A city girl at heart, she doesn’t understand how she and her husband ended up living in New Hampshire, but she’s vowed to escape one day. Until then, writing keeps her off the mean, small town streets.

DARKEST MISERY

About DARKEST MISERY

Red sky at morning, satyr take warning.

Jessica Moore is about to lose her you-know-what. She did the impossible by convincing the Gryphons, the magi, the satyrs and the goblins to work together to stop an apocalyptic prophecy from coming true.

The one thing she can't do? Make them trust each other-which means their plans are already falling apart. With Gryphons and satyrs making plays for her loyalty, Jess is ready to cut the crap and kill everyone herself.

The tentative alliance disintegrates even faster when a key member is murdered and Jess's supposed allies turn on her. Grieving will have to wait. Right now, she's forced to work closely with her least trusted coworker to flush out the culprit, even as she pushes Lucen away to keep him safe.

Dangers that will test her freakish powers await in the Alps, and this time Lucen isn't there to guard her back. Even if she finds what she's looking for, it'll come with a fury-ous heap of trouble.

Warning: Sticking four enemy groups into a conference room is the definition of hell. Throw in a murder, a kidnapping, and a not-so-fabulous trip to France, and you know what? The apocalypse isn't looking so bad. As long as it doesn't involve PowerPoints.

Re: Tracey Martin | The Best Parts of Being An Urban Fantasy Heroine

I think the best part is getting to have a bunch of neat weapons. The sexy boyfriend doesn't hurt either.
(Heidi Ingalls 1:03am August 13, 2015)

I can't choose between the sexy boyfriends or the great
weapons!!
(Darlene Carroll 1:39am August 13, 2015)

The sexy boyfriend, of course! Who wouldn't want to be the focus of all that (ahem) attention...
(Cynthia Powers 1:45am August 13, 2015)

Sexy, satyr boyfriends
(Marissa Yip-Young 6:25am August 13, 2015)

sounds like good reading..
(Pat Boutin 11:52am August 13, 2015)

No boundaries, no limits.
(Deb Philippon 4:11pm August 13, 2015)

The Sexy, satyr boyfriends of course! But that said, the urban fantasy heroine is
also great, since she's usually on par or more kick-ass than the boyfriend. She's
no wall flower waiting for her prince to come save her.
(Sue Ahn 4:45pm August 13, 2015)

I'll go with the sexy boyfriends.
(Janie McGaugh 6:16pm August 13, 2015)

The weapons are wonderful. Can give a woman greater power.
But I'm going with the sexy boyfriend. He'll bring his
toys and share.
(Mary Roya 6:23pm August 13, 2015)

This looks very interesting!
(Beverly Ross 7:53pm August 13, 2015)

Best part? The non boring quality of life ;)
(Kassandra Appel 8:38pm August 13, 2015)

The weapons. Definitely the weapons.
(Susan Voss 8:39pm August 13, 2015)

They usually meet some really hot guys.
(Linda Levine 9:00pm August 13, 2015)

Sexy boyfriend and cool weapons
(Sharon Sommer 9:12pm August 13, 2015)

Exciting urban lifestyle!
(Diane Pollock 11:24pm August 13, 2015)

The best part of being an Urban Fantasy heroine is being
allowed to be mouthy and unedited in sharing opinions.
(G. Bisbjerg 11:43pm August 13, 2015)

Sexy boyfriends would make for great fun.
(Gladys Paradowski 12:04pm August 14, 2015)

Seems like a fierce and intriguing read...thanks for the opportunity to win this book. #DalaiMommaReadingDrama
(Michelle Arredondo 12:07pm August 14, 2015)

Great posts, thanks for sharing! The best part about being a
kick-ass UF heroine is the fact that she can take care of
herself & doesn't need a man to protect her.
(Natalija Skomare 2:08am August 14, 2015)

Yea this sound like it's gonna be good.
(Melissa Crisp 4:27am August 14, 2015)

looks like a good read. Thanks for having the giveaway. Happy summer
(Gloria Vigil 4:49am August 14, 2015)

the best part for me is how bad can she get and still be the hero, making me want to be her
(Regina Elliott 4:51am August 14, 2015)

Awesomeness - best part for me is how she can do ANYTHING and how I SO want to be her!
(Felicia Ciaudelli 7:11am August 14, 2015)

It's all about that base (not bass), LOL!
(Elaine Seymour 8:19am August 14, 2015)

The good part is that they get the main part in the book!! They're strong, cute, have power, usually have access to whatever they need for a weapon, usually get the guy, and if they get injured, they usually come out of it ok.
(Peggy Roberson 9:57am August 14, 2015)

Both the cool weapons and the sexy boyfriend
(Jean Patton 10:39am August 14, 2015)

I think it would be a toss up between the sexy boyfriend and
being so bad*ss!
(Maria Smith 10:54am August 14, 2015)

AWE , the sexy boyfriend ,the leather pants, all of it. I've always wanted all of it . What a lucky girl . Thank you for this.
(Joan Thrasher 11:07am August 14, 2015)

I think the best part is that the woman is powerful - it's a difference from the
normal damsel in distress romance books (although I enjoy reading those
too!). It's nice to see a different type of female character.
(Lily Shah 11:23am August 14, 2015)

The sexy supernatural boyfriend is great but the best part of being a UF heroine is that she can kick ass and doesn't need the sexy boyfriend to protect her.
(Kerry Shaw 11:38am August 14, 2015)

Sexy time with a hot boyfriend!! And the leather pants, too!
(Estela Klemp 12:27pm August 14, 2015)

Being able to take care of yourself.
Theresa N
weceno(at)yahoo(dot)com
(Theresa Norris 12:43pm August 14, 2015)

The hot boyfriends!!
(Laurie Bergh 12:48pm August 14, 2015)

The best part is having the ability to choose what you prefer.
(Robbie Bauldree 1:26pm August 14, 2015)

Sexy boyfriend...Definitely!!
(Allison Cleave 3:36pm August 14, 2015)

Sexy boyfriends!

A heroine who can take care of herself is great!
(Mary Hay 6:39pm August 14, 2015)

Sexy boyfriends
(Mary Smith 7:03pm August 14, 2015)

Saucy attitude, sexy outfits and cool weapons - what a
life!
(Janis Milford 7:29pm August 14, 2015)

Leather Pants with that sexy boyfriend
(Yaritza Santana 12:09pm August 15, 2015)

confidence and attitude
(Audrey Burke 6:55am August 15, 2015)

having self confidence
(Tammy Anderson 7:53am August 15, 2015)

How about the satisfaction of helping people?
(Judy Gregory 8:10am August 15, 2015)

The leather pants - not so much, but weapons, very cool!
(Rita Melton 11:04am August 15, 2015)

wow..like the sound of this!
(Sandy Mangarella 11:11am August 15, 2015)

The sexy boyfriends...
(Delta Upton 12:35pm August 15, 2015)

Anything under the category fantasy has got to have "magic" being the best thing about being a heroine. What's a heroine without "freakish powers" of some kind? Fantasy is alllllll about magic, baby! (Sexy boyfriends will come along when they see a powerful female they want to tame/overcome, anyway :3 )
(Lisa L. 12:45pm August 15, 2015)

I want to get swept up!
(Adella Gonzalez 2:09pm August 15, 2015)

Deffs the sexy satyr boyfriend!!!!
(Jane Bennett 5:34pm August 15, 2015)

Sexy boyfriends!
(Karen Mikusak 7:00pm August 15, 2015)

interesting reading - sexy boyfriend
(Dianne McVetty 11:46pm August 15, 2015)

I think the sexy satyr.
(Debra Guyette 8:35am August 16, 2015)

Looks Good
(Kathy Church 10:34am August 16, 2015)

She is able to take care of herself and has a sexy boyfriend.
(Anna Speed 1:02pm August 16, 2015)

I would go with the leather pants!
(Denise Austin 1:42pm August 16, 2015)

I think the best part would be having the chance to kick butt. In my real life that rarely comes up. Ok, never. Also I love the weapons!! But not the leather pants.
(Mary Songer 7:50pm August 16, 2015)

A Women that can kick butt. Cool.
(Deb Pelletier 8:54pm August 16, 2015)

The best part? General bad-assery of course!
(Denise Malia 10:36pm August 16, 2015)

a sexy man
(Becky Pollard 10:41pm August 16, 2015)
