It’s rare to find a standalone book nowadays. Most books you’ll find on the shelves are always part of
a series. A series is when you have multiple books set in the same world, sometimes following the
same characters. The great thing about this is that once you find a world that enchants you or you
meet new characters you adore, there is always more to discover when its part of a series. Many
readers like myself like to glom through an entire series; that’s when you read the books back to
back. But there is also one thing I do that many of my friends cringe at whenever I admit it. You ready
for it?
Sometimes, I read books out of order.
I know many of you are already questioning my sanity but if the author is skilled and the book is
written properly, the majority of the time I don’t find myself getting lost or confused despite reading
book three in a series instead of book one. And if I end up liking the book, I’ll usually find myself
going back to the beginning and reading them all eventually. This is especially nice for long series
that can be daunting just to look at (Yeah, I’m looking at you, J.D. Robb! Her In Death series is 40+
books long and is still going strong!) So I’m curious to know if you’re willing to read a series out of
order or if you keep on the straight and narrow and absolutely MUST read a series in order!
For this week’s recommendations, I’ll be sharing a brand new series. So if you aren’t comfortable with
starting in the middle of a series, you can try this one. But I also have a couple others, one of which is
set in the middle of the series, and another that marks the end of a prolific one so there are plenty of
options for everyone! Happy reading!
You may know Neill from her Chicagoland Vampire series but Merit
needs to watch out because Claire just might steal the spotlight in this brand new series called
Devil’s Isle.
About: Seven years ago,
the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was
engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled
community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil's Isle.
Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with
magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined
to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused.
Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a
Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a
human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and
the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his
head.
But when the Veil threatens to shatter completely, Claire and Liam must work together to stop it, or
else New Orleans will burn…
My favorite writing duo delivers yet another spellbinding and
action-packed novel featuring my favorite hero and heroine in the genre. This is book eight in the
Kate Daniels series. Andrews are contracted for two more book after this release.
About: In the latest Kate
Daniels novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews, magic is coming and going
in waves in post-Shift Atlanta—and each crest leaves danger in its wake…
After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate—former Beast Lord
Curran Lennart—are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the
infighting, Kate and Curran know that separating from the Pack completely is a process that will take
time.
But when they learn that their friend Eduardo has gone missing, Kate and Curran shift their focus to
investigate his disappearance. Eduardo was a fellow member of the Mercenary Guild, so Kate knows
the best place to start looking is his most recent jobs. As Kate and Curran dig further into the merc’s
business, they discover that the Guild has gone to hell and that Eduardo’s assignments are
connected in the most sinister way…
An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it—before it takes
their city apart piece by piece.
After a highly successful fourteen book run, Carrie Vaughn says
