Penned Con 2015 | Support, Love, and Generosity
Jennifer Barnhart July 25, 2015
Friday at Penned
Con 2015
was filled with lots of laughter, a few tears, and
an amazing author community that welcomed first-time authors to bestsellers.
The laughter could be heard everywhere; in every panel and workshop; in the
book signing rooms as readers met favorite authors for the first time; in
the
keynote speeches; and in the hallways and elevators. The tears came as
authors discussed the support from family and how their fears and stresses
worked their way into the pages of their stories.
But it is the enthusiastic author community and their readers that make Penned
Con
an event to look forward to. The support, love, and generosity of this
community is without a doubt one of the best aspects of Penned Con. This is
most apparent in their work with Action for Autism. Action for Autism
(AFA) was founded
in 2008 in St. Louis, Missouri to help
children and their families with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). AFA’s
mission is to increase awareness and education about autism, as well as
provide therapy and a learning facility, the AFA Academy, for children from
age 2 to 21. To learn more about Action for Autism and their affiliates, The
Howard Park Center and The American School, please visit
www.afastl.org/ At Penned Con 2014, the authors and readers raised just over $11,000 for
Action for Autism. The Penned Con Scholarship Fund helped three children and
their families in the area get the assistance they needed. The goal for
Penned Con 2015 is to raise $15,000 dollars! A percentage of all ticket
sales
and merchandise sales goes toward the Penned Con Scholarship Fund to help a
family send their child to The Howard Park Center or the American School. The volunteers for Penned Con, the authors, the readers, and the family
members who work with Action for Autism (one of whom made the delicious
cupcakes for Penned Con authors as a thank you) create an event that is
joyful, with a few tears, and lots of support.
