Summer is a wondrous time to explore new places, new faces and new mystery
cases;) This week we’re traveling time and across the pond and back, to
meet three women who won’t let subterfuge, a guilty verdict or a royal
wedding get in their way of finding the truth in a case of murder.
Tuesday, July 7th marks the release date of
Kate Parker’s latest novel, ROYAL ASSASSIN. In her third Victorian Bookshop Mystery, Ms. Parker has painted the perfect
crime: murder of a royal body guard. Our heroine, Georgia Fenchurch, an
antiquarian with her own book store in London, is drawn into the case by the
very sexy, but out of her middle-class league, Duke of Blackmore. They have
a past to be sure, but mostly one that leaves Georgia frustrated and
embarrassed because his Grace is in the habit of calling upon Georgia only
when he needs her sleuthing skills to solve a case of royal interest.
This was the first novel by Ms. Parker that I’ve read. I found her
characters and the dialogue extremely engaging and I can assure you, I will
go back and read the first two books in this refreshing taste of royal
history.
About
ROYAL ASSASSIN: From the author of The Vanishing Thief and The
Counterfeit Lady comes an all-new Victorian mystery featuring antiquarian
bookseller Georgia Fenchurch, who doubles as a private investigator for the
secret Archivist Society…
When the Duke of Blackford enters her bookstore, Georgia knows the Archivist
Society is in need of her services. The Tsar of Russia and his family are
visiting Queen Victoria on the auspices of the engagement of the Russian
princess Kira to the son of the Queen’s cousin. When Kira’s bodyguard is
found dead on a train returning from Scotland, the Queen calls on Blackford
to discreetly protect the princess and prevent an international incident.
The Russian royalty refuses help in finding the murderer, suspecting
anarchists and demanding every extremist in London be hanged. But that is
far from the English way. To get the job done, Georgia must go undercover as
Kira’s English secretary. She soon discovers that anarchy isn’t the only
motive in the case—and that someone is determined to turn royal wedding
bells into a funeral dirge.
July 7th also marks the release date of
Victoria Laurie’s thirteenth Psychic Eye Mystery, A STUDY IN
DEATH. Abby Cooper is a psychic with a way of putting her foot in her
mouth. And that foot seems to always lead her down the path to a new mystery
to solve. In this case, however, it led her through the halls of jail
wearing orange.
Whether this is your first, or your lucky thirteenth Psychic
Eye Mystery, you will love the chemistry between Abby and her
endearing husband, Dutch Rivers. They are a duo you don’t want to bypass on
the shelves this week as they trek through the legal system on a hunt for a
killer who left an innocent woman on death row with the clock ticking toward
her execution.
About
SENSE OF DECEPTION: In New York Times bestselling author Victoria
Laurie’s newest Psychic Eye Mystery, Abby Cooper senses a
convicted killer is innocent, but she’ll need hard evidence to save the
woman before it’s too late…
A ticked-off judge has tossed Abby in the slammer for contempt of court, and
during her brief but unpleasant stay she learns the story of a condemned
woman who is facing a far more serious sentence. Skylar Miller has been
found guilty of murder and faces the death penalty. Everyone believes she’s
guilty, including her own family and her ex-husband—everyone, that is,
except Abby, whose finely honed intuition tells her this woman doesn’t
belong behind bars.
With the help of her husband Dutch and her friend Candice, Abby launches
into her own investigation to clear Skylar and find the real killer. But
after a final appeal is denied and Skylar’s attorney scrambles for a stay of
execution, time is running short—and the list of suspects keeps growing.
There’s no margin for error as the life of an innocent woman hangs in the
balance…
National Bestselling author, Anna Lee Huber
brings us her fourth Lady Darby Mystery this week with, A STUDY IN
DEATH. Set in 19th century Scotland, Lady Kiera Darby is on the verge of
saying, “I do,” to her perfect investigative partner, when her latest client
ends up dead and the victim’s death is ruled accidental.
But Kiera knows differently. Lady Drummond was filled with fear and sadness
at the time of her death, despite the perfect pretenses she displayed in
public life. Familiar with the cause of the victim’s unhappiness, Kiera
isn’t about to let justice slip
About A
STUDY IN DEATH: From the national bestselling author of A Grave Matter
comes the latest riveting mystery featuring a most “unusual and romantic”
(Judith Rock) sleuth…
Scotland, 1831. After a tumultuous courtship complicated by three deadly
inquiries, Lady Kiera Darby is thrilled to have found both an investigative
partner and a fiancé in Sebastian Gage. But with her well-meaning—and very
pregnant—sister planning on making their wedding the event of the season,
Kiera could use a respite from the impending madness.
Commissioned to paint the portrait of Lady Drummond, Kiera is saddened when
she recognizes the pain in the baroness’s eyes. Lord Drummond is a brute,
and his brusque treatment of his wife forces Kiera to think of the torment
caused by her own late husband.
Kiera isn’t sure how to help, but when she finds Lady Drummond prostrate on
the floor, things take a fatal turn. The physician called to the house and
Lord Drummond appear satisfied to rule her death natural, but Kiera is
convinced that poison is the real culprit.
Now, armed only with her knowledge of the macabre and her convictions, Kiera
intends to discover the truth behind the baroness’s death—no matter what, or
who, stands in her way…
