In the post-MAD MEN and BREAKING BAD world, cabler AMC continues trying
to capture the attention of viewers with innovative series, despite some falling short
of the network’s aspirations. For every BETTER CALL SAUL there is a TURN,
a show with great promise that I’m still waiting to deliver. But, with Sunday nights
feeling a little overloaded, AMC offered up a new trick on June 14th.
The premiere of sci-fi robot drama HUMANS (an American remake of a Swedish
series) quietly laid the foundation for a show that is surprisingly vivid and
addictive. The pilot introduces the characters, who are all hiding something, and
leaves the audience with burning questions we hope will be answered (at least) by the
end of the season. I can’t wait for more.
TYRANT – Tuesdays at 10 pm on FX
The second season of my favorite summer show TYRANT also started up a few weeks
ago. We were left in pretty dire straights when Jamal and Barry battled it out for
control of their disjointed kingdom. With the two new episodes of the current season
already aired, viewers have lots of time to catch up before we get into the meat of the
season. But as of right now, I am incredibly concerned for Barry, who was left in the
desert to die after betraying his brother. Too bad for Jamal, the people of Ma’an think
Barry is the perfect martyr for their insurgency.
Many of us remember the tragic day that Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27 in 2011. I
remember that day, and I remember how her death had a certain inevitability about it
yet was still shocking and very sad. This riveting documentary titled AMY invites you
into her life by showing you unseen personal footage (like MONTAGE OF HECK about Kurt
Cobain of Nirvana). It’ll hit you right in the feels and make you understand why she
was the way she was, while also showing you just how gifted she really was. The film
opens on July 10.
TANGERINE, July 10, 2015
The world of prostitution and gender roles is foreign to some, and even vile to others.
Shot exclusively on iPhone 5s, TANGERINE may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but the
beauty that everyone should find in it is how different and unique it is. It drops you
in the underbelly of Los Angeles and takes you on a thrilling adventure with two of the
most fun and lovable characters. The film opens on July 10.
There has yet to be a definitive comedy to hit theaters this year, but that is about to
change with TRAINWRECK. Director Judd Apatow is one the seminal voices of comedy and
this time he has lent his voice (aka screenwriting duties) over to comedian Amy
Schumer. The comedic collaboration of Schumer/Apatow is a match made in heaven. It’s
personal, it’s raunchy and it’s the best romantic comedy in quite some time. The film
releases on July 17.
THE END OF THE TOUR, July 31, 2015
THE END OF THE TOUR is rumored to be a profound piece of work that covers the
troubled yet brilliant author David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) as he embarks on a
five day book tour with journalist David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) for his acclaimed
1996 novel
