I cannot remember the last book I’ve read that was a standalone book or wasn’t part of a series.
Series are so massive that it’s almost a rarity these days to read or write a book that isn’t connected
to others. I’m a big fan of series because they’re familiar to me. You read one book and if you enjoy it,
there’s that comfort in knowing that you’ll probably enjoy the next book and the next book after that.
In Urban Fantasy, you get to follow the same characters. In Paranormal Romance, you get to
submerge yourself in the same world. As an author, there’s a lot more play time and more
opportunities to explore the world you have built through series rather than having to reveal it all in
one book. It definitely makes for an interesting and fun-filled experience for the reader.
But when a series comes to an end, it can be a devastating time for long-time faithful readers.
Sometimes, if you love a series so much, you feel as if you can read about the characters forever. Yet
when one series is coming towards an end, that doesn’t mean all the fun has to end with it. With
spin-off series, readers can get the same world they know and love but experience it through the
eyes of another character, creating new opportunities for new experiences and obviously more books
from your favorite author! So for me, it’s always very exciting to hear about a brand new series
because it’s a new opportunity to discover a new world, new characters and perhaps even a new
author!
June has a few releases that mark the beginning of a new series. This week I’ve picked out my
favorites to share with you!
This book actually caught my attention because of its eye-
catching cover and interesting title. If the premise of faes inhabiting trailer parks and dive bars
doesn’t interest you, then the male protagonist, Gallow certainly will.
About: New York Times
bestselling author Lilith Saintcrow returns to dark fantasy with a new series where the faery world
Jeremiah Gallow is just another construction worker, and that's the way he likes it.
inhabits diners, dive bars and trailer parks.
He's left his past
behind, but some things cannot be erased. Like the tattoos on his arms that transform into a weapon,
or that he was once closer to the Queen of Summer than any half-human should be. Now the half-
sidhe all in Summer once feared is dragged back into the world of enchantment, danger, and fickle
fae - by a woman who looks uncannily like his dead wife. Her name is Robin, and her secrets are
more than enough to get them both killed. A plague has come, the fullborn-fae are dying, and the
dark answer to Summer's Court is breaking loose.
This series features three sisters who escape the wrath of a witch
hunter four centuries ago. What’s nice about this series is that if you enjoyed the first book, there isn’t
a long wait for the next one as the books are releasing back-to-back-to-back this summer.
About: Four centuries
ago, in a small Scottish village, three baby girls escaped the wrath of a witch hunter. Today, one
young woman will learn about her secret history, her heart's destiny, and the sisters she never knew
she had…
With her blue-black hair and dark eyes, Raye Larsen has never fit in with the Scandinavian community
of New Bergin, Wisconsin. Being adopted is part of the reason she feels like an outsider, but what
really sets Raye apart is her ability to see dead people. Everywhere. She's learned to keep her visions
to herself…until she stumbles onto the ghost of a murder victim who needs Raye's help. Enter Bobby
Doucet, a distractingly handsome homicide detective who has been tracking a killer all the way from
New Orleans. Could this be the break in his case he's been looking for all along? Meanwhile, the
deeper Raye gets involved with the case--and with Bobby--the closer she comes to unlocking the
mystery of her own origins. What she discovers about herself could destroy everything she knows…
and everyone she loves. Is finding the truth worth the risk?
Filled with dark magic, dazzling romance, and dire suspense, IN THE AIR TONIGHT is the first book in
a thrilling new series by New York Times bestselling author Lori Handeland.
THE SHADOW REVOLUTION by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith
Set in the Victorian era, the Crown & Key series has some
steampunk, paranormal and fantasy elements that is sure to appeal to many readers.
About: A thrilling new
Victorian-era urban fantasy for fans of Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles, the Showtime series
Penny Dreadful, and the Sherlock Holmes movies featuring Robert Downey, Jr.
They are the realm’s
last, best defense against supernatural evil. But they’re going to need a lot more silver. As fog
descends, obscuring the gas lamps of Victorian London, werewolves prowl the shadows of back
alleys. But they have infiltrated the inner circles of upper-crust society as well. Only a handful of
specially gifted practitioners are equipped to battle the beasts.
Among them are the roguish Simon
Archer, who conceals his powers as a spell-casting scribe behind the smooth veneer of a dashing
playboy; his layabout mentor, Nick Barker, who prefers a good pub to thrilling heroics; and the self-
possessed alchemist Kate Anstruther, who is equally at home in a ballroom as she is on a battlefield.
After a lycanthrope targets Kate’s vulnerable younger sister, the three join forces with fierce Scottish
monster-hunter Malcolm MacFarlane—but quickly discover they’re dealing with a threat far greater
than anything they ever imagined.
Where are there any stand alone books available to download on my Kindle. Almost all that is out there are all series. I am now reading series of Kelley Armstrong which I can hardly put down but just wondering for some future reading. (Tisha Reynolds 2:52pm June 18, 2015)
There's less and less standalone titles now in PNR. You will rarely find a UF that is standalone as the style of that genre often follows one or two characters throughout the series but maybe if we do some researching we can find some gems! (Annie Tegelan 8:46am July 2, 2015)
