YA Musings | Better Summer Beach Reads

Every summer there is list upon list of the perfect books to take with you to the beach. I have nothing but respect for those lists and the excellent recommendations, but then I realize, I am not the type of person to read on the beach. Here are my top ten reasons why I will never again take a book to the beach.

  1. 1. The glare. If only I had a pair of prescription sunglasses.

  2. 2. Sunscreen. When you need to reapply SPF 50 or higher every 45 minutes, there's a good chance your glasses will be smudgy and smeared within 15 minutes of the first application and it only goes downhill from there.

  3. 3. Sweat. Who can read when their eyes are burning with sweat and sunscreen?

  4. 4. Warped pages. It's like the book has been in a damp attic for a decade rather than in my hands for two hours.

  5. 5. Condensation. An ice cold drink is great on the beach, not so much for the pages of my book.

  6. 6. Books are heavy. Using the book to block the sun is a bad idea when your hands are sweaty and slick with sunscreen. There is no way to play it cool when you drop your book on your face for the fifth time in thirty minutes.

  7. 7. Cavorters. You know those people having fun, chasing each other, flinging water droplets everywhere. I'm in the Dark Night of the Soul. Only tear drops should land on these perfect pages.

  8. 8. Spoilers. Stranger who sees my book cover, "Oh, I love that book. Just wait until you get to the ending." Then I think maybe I should drop the book on my face a little harder.

  9. 9. Weird sunburns. A sunburn that exists only on inside of your left calf and ankle and the top of your right foot, while your neck is weirdly white because you didn't look up or move for the last two hours.

  10. 10. Audio-books!

Audio-books are perfect for the book-lovers beach vacation. Whether you're planning a road trip to the beach, spending time by the pool, or relaxing in a hammock in the shade, an audio-book can let you close your eyes, kick back, lose yourself in the story.

Here are three books I want to lose myself in this summer.

DANGEROUS DECEPTION by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

DANGEROUS DECEPTION
DANGEROUS DECEPTION

Is there any better pick for a summer day than a dark fantasy Gothic romance? I didn't think so either.

About: From the world of BEAUTIFUL CREATURES--a dangerous new tale of love and magic continues in the sequel to DANGEROUS CREATURES.

After a disastrous car crash outside New York City, Ridley Duchannes-Dark Caster, Siren, and bona fide bad girl-has gone missing. Her wannabe rocker and quarter Incubus boyfriend, Wesley "Link" Lincoln, was driving, and when he comes to, Ridley is nowhere to be found. The only clue is the giant raven emblazoned on the hood of the truck that hit them, which can mean only one thing: Silas Ravenwood is back. And he has Ridley.

Determined to find her, Link reunites with old friends John Breed and Liv Durand, his New York bandmates, and the mysterious Lennox Gates-who has his own reasons for tracking down Ridley. Together they travel through the Caster Tunnels and the Deep South to New Orleans, where they uncover the truth about the infamous Ravenwood labs and exactly what Silas has been doing within those walls. By the time Link and his friends reach Ridley, she is no longer the Siren they know and love. She's something new. This time, love might not be enough to save them.

In this sequel to Dangerous Creatures, the bestselling spin-off of the #1 New York Times bestselling BEAUTIFUL CREATURES novels, coauthors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl deliver an intoxicating blend of magic, suspense, and danger.

THE DEVIL YOU KNOW by Trish Doller

THE DEVIL YOU KNOW
THE DEVIL YOU KNOW

Summer road trips are not always fun, sand, and adventure.

About: From critically-acclaimed author Trish Doller comes a powerful new psychological page-turner perfect for fans of Lauren Oliver and Sara Zarr.

Eighteen-year-old Arcadia wants adventure. Living in a tiny Florida town with her dad and four-year-old brother, Cadie spends most of her time working, going to school, and taking care of her family. So when she meets two handsome cousins at a campfire party, she finally has a chance for fun. They invite her and friend to join them on a road trip, and it's just the risk she's been craving-the opportunity to escape. But what starts out as a fun, sexy journey quickly becomes dangerous when she discovers that one of them is not at all who he claims to be. One of them has deadly intentions.

A road trip fling turns terrifying in this contemporary story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah J. Maas

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES

The start of an addictive new series by Sarah J. Maas, A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES looks to captivate and enchant.

About: When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin- one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin-and his world-forever.

Perfect for fans of Kristen Cashore and George R. R. Martin, this first book in a sexy and action-packed new series is impossible to put down!

Re: YA Musings | Better Summer Beach Reads

I'm in agreement with you regarding taking your books to the
beach. Your choice of Audio books is quite interesting, and
I'll be taking them into consideration for my venture outside
this year. Thank you for the selection!!
