April's Affections and Intrigues: Love and Mystery Bloom

Into the Night
The Latest in Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy

Urban Fantasy in New Orleans

I don’t know how the weather is in your part of the world, but here in Toronto it’s just warming up. Although the sun is finally making an appearance, the wind has been forcing me to remain in my light jacket until I can break out the shorts and sunglasses. It doesn’t help that everyone else seems to be in Spring Break mode, jetting off to hot locales and partying it up. It kind of gets me thinking…where would I go if I could just hop on a plane somewhere for a week?

There are the obvious places like Florida or Mexico but something along the same lines of balmy nights and interesting people is New Orleans. While not the most obvious Spring Break destination spot, you cannot deny that it has an amazing night life and an abundance of delicious food.

Coincidently, the month of April has a lot of Urban Fantasy titles releases set in New Orleans. So if you can’t enjoy the taste of beignets yourself, there’s plenty of ways to live your Spring Break vicariously through these characters!

What I love about reading books set in New Orleans is the shot of culture you get. There is also a great mix of urban and paranormal influences which explains why it's such a perfect fit for Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. But who am I kidding? It's all about the hot Cajun heroes that I love the most! What about you? Do you love books set in New Orleans? If so, which are some of your favourite books or series?

GARDEN OF DREAMS AND DESIRES by Kristen Painter

GARDEN OF DREAMS AND DESIRES
GARDEN OF DREAMS AND DESIRES

Painter has an action-packed book filled with mystery and mayhem in the final book to her Crescent City series.

About: Magic is twisted and chaos reigns in this climactic final novel in the Crescent City trilogy by award-winning author Kristen Painter. New Orleans is on the brink of war. Harlow is a ghost in her own body. She has no control, no power -- all she can do is watch as her twin sister Ava Mae lives recklessly and foolishly, slowly destroying everything Harlow has worked so hard for. Augustine needs to focus on his new role as Guardian of New Orleans, as tourists mysteriously disappear off the streets, but all he can think of is rescuing Harlow -- Keeping his family safe. As the Coven grows more powerful, control of the city hangs in the balance and if the witches prevail, no fae will survive.

VENGEANCE OF THE DEMON by Diana Rowland

VENGEANCE OF THE DEMON

With the seventh book in the Kara Gillian series, Rowland ups the stakes and will undoubtedly take readers on a ride of a lifetime.

About: Demon summoner Kara Gillian is on the wrong side of the law— and there’s evidence to prove it. Too bad the courts don’t accept “fighting demonic forces” as justification for murder and mayhem. Yet Kara has problems that go way beyond her legal woes. When the enemy demonic lords spur their human accomplices into high gear, master summoner Katashi aggressively pursues their goal to establish a permanent gate between Earth and the demon realm. To hell with the consequences for humanity. The line between ally and enemy blurs as Kara gathers the remnants of her posse to prevent a devastating demonic incursion, but a shattered trust may cost them the war and put Kara behind bars. With treachery rife, and her loved ones in danger, Kara must call upon the essence of who she truly is in order to rally back from a crushing loss. And if she can’t, the world is going straight to hell.

DARK HEIR by Faith Hunter

Powerful vampire witches threaten the city and Jane in the ninth book of the action-packed Jane Yellowrock series.

About: Shapeshifting skinwalker Jane Yellowrock is the best in the business when it comes to slaying vampires. But her latest fanged foe may be above her pay grade… For centuries, the extremely powerful and ruthless vampire witches of the European Council have wandered the Earth, controlling governments, fostering war, creating political conflict, and often leaving absolute destruction in their wake. One of the strongest of them is set to create some havoc in the city of New Orleans, and it’s definitely personal. Jane is tasked with tracking him down. With the help of a tech wiz and an ex-Army ranger, her partners in Yellowrock Securities, she’ll have to put everything on the line, and hope it’s enough. Things are about to get real hard in the Big Easy.

Re: Urban Fantasy in New Orleans

What's just as nice as getting some good ideas from you for
books to put on our TBR lists, having to do with New
Orleans, is to have a Best Friend who actually lives there!!
My Best Friend is someone who I cherish, and has filled me
in on the wonderful food, the restaurants, and the life,
architecture, and things to do and see while out there,
along with other things ordinary people wouldn't know about.
I hope to be able to go down there to visit with her, as
well as her family, sometime in the near future. Thank you
for the great tips on the books for my TBR list, too!!

Sorry to hear about your cancelled trip, Debbie. Hopefully you get another
