The Unknown and Imaginative World of Science Fiction

Last week most of the United States felt the ridiculously cold temperatures as they tried to dig themselves out from under even more snow. I, for one, was tired of being cold and looking at snow. So I closed the curtains, made myself some coffee, and started watching Firefly for the umpteenth time.

I love this series and it’s my go to when I want to laugh and see hope for humanity. And I with the snow and cold, I need every bit of hope I can get. Firefly gives me that hope. I get wrapped up in the characters’ lives and choices, and while I don’t LARP, I know I’d always choose to be Zoe Washburne if I did. But why do I invest so much of myself into this unfortunately-cancelled-after-one-season TV series and these characters when I know the outcome?

Part of that lies in Joss Whedon’s talent for creating amazing characters and part of it lies in the beauty of the science fiction genre. Science fiction and speculative fiction, which includes sci-fi, horror, and fantasy, thrill the reader with unknown and imaginative worlds. In Firefly, the ‘verse is dark and beautiful, filled with terraformed worlds where humans are rebuilding civilization and culture and on the edges of this world is madness and savagery. Part of the appeal of science fiction is that the imaginative worlds can thrill with their familiarity and differences, but ultimately these new worlds must be about humanity at this point in time in our development. Science fiction is what could be and what is.

That’s why this week’s recommendations are science-fiction series that thrill with their imaginative worlds and show us the best and worst of our humanity.

BURNING KINGDOMS by Lauren DeStefano

BURNING KINGDOMS BURNING KINGDOMS

Danger descends in the second book of The Internment Chronicles, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Chemical Garden trilogy.

About: After escaping Internment, Morgan and her fellow fugitives land on the ground to finally learn about the world beneath their floating island home.

The ground is a strange place where water falls from the sky as snow, and people watch moving pictures and visit speakeasies. A place where families can have as many children as they want, their dead are buried in vast gardens of bodies, and Internment is the feature of an amusement park.

It is also a land at war.

Everyone who fled Internment had their own reasons to escape their corrupt haven, but now they’re caught under the watchful eye of another king who wants to dominate his world. They may have made it to the ground, but have they dragged Internment with them?

SEA OF STARS by Amy A. Bartol

SEA OF STARS SEA OF STARS

The highly anticipated sequel to UNDER DIFFERENT STARS, winner of four 2014 utopYA Awards.

About: Eighteen-year-old Kricket Hollowell was looking for her place in the world when she discovered that the universe was bigger—and more dangerous—than she had ever dreamed. Now, whisked across space to the planet Ethar, Kricket learns that her genetic ability to see the future makes her a sought-after commodity…and the catalyst for war between her star-crossed parents’ clans. According to Alameedan prophecy, one house will rise to power and the other will be completely wiped out, and Kricket’s precognition is believed to be the weapon that will tip the scales.

A target of both the Rafe and the Alameeda houses, Kricket finds protection— and a home—in the arms of Trey, her Etharian bodyguard-turned-boyfriend. But her visions of what’s to come disturb her deeply, especially since she must discover whether the gift of foresight will allow her to rewrite the future, or if her fate is as immovable as the stars.

THE SHADOW CABINET by Maureen Jonhson

THE SHADOW CABINET THE SHADOW CABINET

The thrilling third installment to the Edgar-nominated, bestselling series Shades of London.

About: Rory and her friends are reeling from a series of sudden and tragic events. While racked with grief, Rory tries to determine if she acted in time to save a member of the squad. If she did, how do you find a ghost? Also, Rory's classmate Charlotte has been kidnapped by Jane and her nefarious organization. Evidence is uncovered of a forty-year-old cult, ten missing teenagers, and a likely mass murder. Everything indicates that Charlotte's in danger, and it seems that something much bigger and much more terrible is coming.

Time is running out as Rory fights to find her friends and the ghost squad struggles to stop Jane from unleashing her spectral nightmare on the entire city. In the process, they'll discover the existence of an organization that underpins London itself—and Rory will learn that someone she trusts has been keeping a tremendous secret.
