Young Adult Musings | Romance for Valentine’s Day

“We are most alive when we’re in love.” ~ John Updike

Valentine’s is not my favorite holiday. I’m not even sure I would count it as a holiday… but I’ll admit to a few flutters of the heart when a secret someone sent me a rose on Valentine’s in my junior year of high school. The card read “Happy Valentine’s Day”. No signature, only a single red rose surrounded by baby’s breath all wrapped in dark-green tissue paper. My giddy and romantic mind went into overdrive, trying to figure out who it could have been—who I wanted it to be—before logic and reason took hold. My mom sent it. I recognized the handwriting when I actually took the time to see. Thanks, Mom, for being sweet and dashing my hopes at the same time.

For ten seconds or so, an eternity of anticipation, romantic longing, and painful doubt, I knew why Valentine’s Day was special. In those few seconds of anticipation and hope, I felt more alive and connected to myself and the world. Anything was possible because I could imagine it. I don’t know about you but in ten seconds my thoughts went from shy blushes in the hallway to the first kiss, dancing at prom, star-gazing while whispering our fears and dreams, and promises of eternal love. All from a single rose and unsigned card. It was all so sweet and glossy like a teen movie complete with my own soundtrack of forever love.

That’s why this week’s picks are about the moments of anticipation, doubt, and love. Those moments that bring pain and euphoria, but without a doubt make you feel alive.

I’LL MEET YOU THERE by Heather Demetrios

I’LL MEET YOU THERE
I’LL MEET YOU THERE

If seventeen-year-old Skylar Evans were a typical Creek View girl, her future would involve a double-wide trailer, a baby on her hip, and the graveyard shift at Taco Bell. But after graduation, the only thing standing between straightedge Skylar and art school are three minimum-wage months of summer. Skylar can taste the freedom—that is, until her mother loses her job and everything starts coming apart. Torn between her dreams and the people she loves, Skylar realizes everything she’s ever worked for is on the line.

Nineteen-year-old Josh Mitchell had a different ticket out of Creek View: the Marines. But after his leg is blown off in Afghanistan, he returns home, a shell of the cocksure boy he used to be.

What brings Skylar and Josh together is working at the Paradise—a quirky motel off California’s dusty Highway 99. Despite their differences, their shared isolation turns into an unexpected friendship and soon, something deeper.

HOW (NOT) TO FALL IN LOVE by Lisa Brown Roberts

HOW (NOT) TO FALL IN LOVE
HOW (NOT) TO FALL IN LOVE

Seventeen-year-old Darcy Covington never had to worry about money or where her next shopping spree was coming from. Even her dog ate gourmet. Then one day, Darcy’s car is repossessed from the parking lot of her elite private school. As her father’s business hit the skids, Dad didn’t just skip town, he bailed on his family.

Fortunately, Darcy’s uncle owns a thrift shop where she can hide out from the world. There’s also Lucas, the wickedly hot fix-it guy she can’t stop crushing on, even if she’s not sure they’ll ever get out of the friend zone.

But it’s here among the colorful characters of her uncle’s world that Darcy begins to see something more in herself...if she has the courage to follow it.

Megan doesn't speak. She hasn't spoken in months.

Pushing away the people she cares about is just a small price to pay. Because there are things locked inside Megan's head - things that are screaming to be heard - that she cannot, must not, let out. Then Jasmine starts at school: bubbly, beautiful, talkative Jasmine. And for reasons Megan can't quite understand, life starts to look a bit brighter. Megan would love to speak again, and it seems like Jasmine might be the answer.

But if she finds her voice, will she lose everything else?

Re: Young Adult Musings | Romance for Valentine’s Day

After reading your posting, I wanted to say that I think
that what your Mom did for you on that one Valentine's Day
was very sweet. She wanted you to feel special, if even for
a moment, because you were special in her eyes!! When I
look back, I can't recall one Valentine's Day growing up, or
any Valentine's Day, where my Mom ever did anything like
that for me, so you should feel extra special, having a Mom
as thoughtful and insightful as her!! Your choice of books
are good ones as well. I've seen them floating around the
web on this site as well as others, and have them on my TBR
list. I'm looking forward to reading them. Have a very
Happy Valentine's Day, and do something special for your Mom
in return. She loves you so much!!

Peggy, my mom really is wonderful. I get my love of books from
her; just one more reason she's deserves a special Valentine's!
Happy Valentine's Day to you!
