This October, some of your favorite authors will be dressing up their
characters for a very special virtual costume party as part of Fresh Fiction's
Halloween Boo-k Spectacular event! So come on in--the party just started!
Mike Taggart, the hero of LAST CHANCE FAMILY will
arrive at the Boo-k Spectacular costume bash wearing a black Stetson, tilted
back on his head in a friendly-like manner. He’s looking particularly splendid
this evening in a black, double-breasted Western frock coat, a white shirt, with
just a hint of lace at the cuffs, a black string tie, and an absolutely gorgeous
silk, brocade double-breasted vest. A pair of black boots, highly polished,
finish off the outfit.
He’s got playing cards in his pocket. He checked his gun at the door, as any
peace-abiding gentleman (and gambler) would do. He’s looking for a game of five
card draw. There being no takers for high-stakes poker, he ambles over to the
bar, orders a scotch, neat, and smiles at the woman dressed up like bride who is
standing there drinking a martini.
He sips his whiskey and watches the crowd in a vain attempt to avoid looking at
the bride’s cleavage.
She notices his gaze and turns toward him. “Hey, handsome,” she says in a husky
voice, “who are you supposed to be?”
He tilts his hat farther back on his head, gives her a little smile out of the
corner of his mouth, and says, “Brett Maverick, at your service. But before this
goes any further, ma’am, my old pappy once gave me some very sage advice about
women like you. ‘Son,’ he used to say, ‘stay clear of weddings because one of
them is liable to be your own.’”
