Last night, ten readers gathered at the Stonebriar Centre Barnes & Noble
cafe for the September meeting of Fresh Fiction's Frisco Book Club.
We prepared to welcome fall and kiss summer good-bye during our ice-breaker
game, in which readers were asked to share our names, current reads, and where
we wished we'd gone on vacation this summer. Even with our lattes in hand
(and hopes for cooler weather in mind), most of us found ourselves dreaming of
the beach and poolside vacations we missed this summer. Next year, right,
readers?
The conversation naturally shifted into the latest in book news, from our
appreciation of National Library Card Sign-Up Month to our opinions of
recent online scandals concerning some of the group's favorite (and now
former-favorite) authors. Overall, it was agreed that our favorite authors will
not only be those who treat us well through the way they write, but by the way they
speak and act toward their readers--whether that's on social media platforms or
a convention hotel bar. After agreeing that friendly bibliophiles offer the best
conversation and company, we moved on to discuss September's chosen titles.

Our readers gave this cozy paranormal mystery by Heather
Blake a big thumbs-up. After reading this gem, most of the ladies agreed
they quickly downloaded the rest of Blake's Wishcraft series to satisfy
their cravings for the sweet small-town setting and cast of quirky characters
these books offer. |
GRAVE MERCY by Isabelle LeFevers

Even our non-YA-lovers found themselves hooked by
page two of this gripping historical teen fantasy by Robin
LeFevers. Several of us were purely mesmerized by LeFevers' skill for
weaving setting details seamlessly into the fabric of the story; we all agreed
that info-dump was not an engaging way to build worlds, so we were thankful that
GRAVE
MERCY's world is so rich with details in all the right places. |
After doling out goodie bags to the group's new attendees, and offering some
last-minute suggestions for noteworthy new releases, we parted ways until next
month. On October 6, we will come together again to discuss next month's titles:
FIRST GRAVE
ON THE RIGHT and WOULD-BE WITCH.
FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT by Darynda Jones

Readers & 'Ritas keynote Darynda
Jones's smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley
Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper. Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job
to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have
died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want
Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely
hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her
life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be
something else entirely. |

In the small town of Duvall, Texas, the only
thing
more troublesome than gossip --is magic. The family magic seems to have skipped Tammy Jo Trask. All she gets in the way
of the supernatural are a few untimely visits from the long dead, smart-mouthed
family ghost, Edie. But when her locket—an heirloom that happens to hold Edie's
soul—is stolen in the midst of a town-wide crime spree, it's time for Tammy to
find her inner witch. After a few experiences in dysfunctional magic, Tammy turns to the only one who
can help; the very rich and highly magical, Bryn Lyons. He might have all the
answers-and a 007 savoir faire to boot-but the locket isn't the only legacy
passed down in Tammy's family. She also inherited a warning...to stay away from
anyone named Lyons. |
