Did you ever look back on a past relationship and think it might've gone better if it had started earlier or later?  I did.  Before I met my husband, I used to say my epitaph would read "Her timing was always wrong."

The hero and heroine of GUARDIAN, my new contemporary fantasy romance, weren't ready for each other when they first met.  Stefan Harper, a medical student, was also a mage and used his scant free time to study magical healing.  Unfortunately, Camellia "Mel" Wray despised anything that smacked of "woo-woo" because of her childhood.  Her mom advocated New Age ideas in their small, rural hometown, and Mel suffered ridicule and ostracism as a result.

Stefan couldn't think of a way to present the truth that might lead her to accept it, so he kept his magical studies a secret.  Mel eventually realized he wasn't where he said he'd be on his missing weekends and confronted him. Unable to trust her with the truth, he let her believe he'd been unfaithful.  His magic and the importance of not revealing that world to outsiders who couldn't accept it tore Stefan and Mel apart.

Nine years later, the murder of her former music teacher reunites them, Mel as an FBI agent working the case and Stefan as the consulting medical expert.  As soon as they meet, the old attraction blazes between them again, but secrets still stand in their way.  Stefan needs only one look at the victim's body to know this is not an ordinary murder but an otherworldly one.

Somehow he and his mage comrades must catch the ghoul killers attacking ordinary humans without revealing the magical world.  Caught in a deadly trap, he can save the woman he still loves only by revealing the full extent of his powers.  Have they grown enough, changed enough, to blend their different worlds?  Or will love cost them even more than it did the first time?

One of the joys of writing romance is helping characters heal the wounds hold them back or keep them apart.  I particularly enjoyed giving Stefan and Mel their do-over.

One commenter today will receive NetGalley access to read GUARDIAN for free, so tell me:  Do you like second chance at love stories?  If so, do you have a favorite book or movie with that theme?  Do you have a "wrong time love" story you want to share?

Re: Nancy Northcott | The Right Time for Love

This book sounds interesting & the blurb makes you wonder how he breaks the truth to Mel
(A.I. Lehl 12:12pm July 9, 2013)

I've been waiting for this book to come out. I like second chance stories. My
favorites are by Sharon Sala, Chance McCall & Jackson Rule.
(Laura Gullickson 4:43am July 9, 2013)

I do like second chance stories and I enjoy ones with a wrong time type theme. As to a favorite, none come to mind so I must not have one.
(Debra Guyette 6:37am July 9, 2013)

I love second chance stories. My favorite second chance movie
is probably When Harry Met Sally
(Donna Antonio 7:44am July 9, 2013)

I like second chance love stories. No fave really!!
(Vicki Hancock 7:46am July 9, 2013)

It's a bit early for me to put on my thinking cap, so I can't remember if I've read a second chance love story or not. If you've read as many books as I have over the years, plus have been recovering from a head injury which has affected your memory, you would see my dilemma!! I would love to read your book, however. It sounds like a wonderful read, far from the norm for the Summer!! I need a little bit of a mix-up in my genres of books, and yours would be one at the top of my list, since it is a romance!! Congratulations on your book. I'm sure it will do well.
(Peggy Roberson 9:28am July 9, 2013)

I love second change stories...I guess my favorite one is "Starman".
(Bonnie Lujan 10:03am July 9, 2013)

Persuasion is the best second chance at love story ever.
(Pam Howell 10:10am July 9, 2013)

I like second chance stories! Boy meets girl. Boy breaks up with girl. Boy and girl get together for all time. there is hope thru out the story.
(Elaine Thomas 11:05am July 9, 2013)

Yes, I love a second chance story and I would say that my
favorite was also Starman. Your book: GUARDIAN sounds like a
wonderful book to win and read this summer. Thank You very
much for the great contest. Thanks, Cecilia CECE
(Cecilia Dunbar Hernandez 12:02pm July 9, 2013)

I do enjoy second chance stories... it is wonderful to see that two people allow themselves to love one another again after something had kept them apart... Congrats on this latest books... love this series!
(Colleen Conklin 12:54pm July 9, 2013)

I like second chance stories when they are done well. I recently finished reading
_Black Hills_ by Nora Roberts, which is a second chance story. And of course, the
lovely Jane Austen has a number, which is part of the reason she's my favorite
author. GUARDIAN sounds quite interesting and I"m looking forward to reading
it.
(Rachel B 12:58pm July 9, 2013)

Hi, everyone, and thanks for stopping by. Sorry I'm a bit later than I'd hoped to
be chiming in. From here out, though, I'll be dropping by at intervals and
responding to everyone.
(Nancy Northcott 1:34pm July 9, 2013)

Thank you, A.I. Without giving anything away, I can say Stefan breaks the news
to Mel very carefully and with some initial understatement.
(Nancy Northcott 1:35pm July 9, 2013)

Laura, that's so nice to hear! Chance McCall and Jackson Rule are both on my
"must read" list. I'm kind of afraid to start them lest they grab me so hard that I
find myself reading Sharon's entire backlist immediately.
(Nancy Northcott 1:37pm July 9, 2013)

Debra, it's hard for me to think of answers to blog questions sometimes. If a
second chance story you particularly like springs to mind later, feel free to pop
in and share.
(Nancy Northcott 1:38pm July 9, 2013)

Donna, I tremendously enjoyed When Harry Met Sally. I suspect that movie is
already a classic.
(Nancy Northcott 1:39pm July 9, 2013)

Vicki, sometimes I have trouble choosing a favorite. If one comes to mind later,
feel free to stop by and mention it.
(Nancy Northcott 1:39pm July 9, 2013)

Thank you, Peggy, and I do see your dilemma. I'm sorry you were hurt but glad
to hear you're recovering. Morning isn't my most functional time, either, so I
can sympathize with no hitting on all cylinders first thing.
(Nancy Northcott 1:43pm July 9, 2013)

Bonnie, I loved Starman. It's comparatively gentle for a science fiction film, but
maybe that's part of the appeal.
(Nancy Northcott 1:44pm July 9, 2013)

Pam, we got as far as renting Persuasion but didn't get it watched. It does
sound intriguing, though, and we plan to try it again.
(Nancy Northcott 1:45pm July 9, 2013)

Elaine, that's a good point. Even more than a new relationship, second chance
ones carry a thread of hope. The couple have to face not only their individual
baggage but their joint issues.
(Nancy Northcott 1:46pm July 9, 2013)

Thank you, CECE! I loved Starman, too. It's sweet and a bit gentle for science
fiction, but it holds up well despite the outmoded tech.
(Nancy Northcott 1:47pm July 9, 2013)

Colleen, thanks! That's nice to hear. I think it's harder to trust someone who
has hurt you before than it is to get past old hurts from other sources. I think
that's why I like this kind of story so much.
(Nancy Northcott 1:48pm July 9, 2013)

Thanks, Rachel! I thought Black Hills was fantastic, though the danger to the
animals was a bit wrenching.
(Nancy Northcott 1:49pm July 9, 2013)

I like second chance stories because I am always needing
second chances myself! My timing is the worse thing about me
:D
(Ilona Fenton 1:54pm July 9, 2013)

I love second chances I feel like I have my second chance being with my
grand kids who I love very much thank you
(Ava Curtis 2:21pm July 9, 2013)

Ilona, I've been grateful for some second chances, too! And I so hear you on
the timing.
(Nancy Northcott 2:41pm July 9, 2013)

Ava, isn't it great how little ones offer us a fresh look at the world?
(Nancy Northcott 2:41pm July 9, 2013)

I love second chance stories!! Just shows that some things
really are meant to be!
(Jolene Allcock 3:40pm July 9, 2013)

Sounds like a very interesting read....and I do love a good book!
(cHARLETTE bOND 5:14pm July 9, 2013)

Sounds like a really good read. Thznk you. I would love to win.
(Yvonne Simpkins 5:44pm July 9, 2013)

I LOVE reading about second chances! Being human, not everyone gets it right the first time! I grew up hearing, "Don't worry about it. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be." It's nice hearing how some people actually MAKE it meant to be!
(Marcia Berbeza 6:19pm July 9, 2013)

I really enjoy the second chance at love trope. I think my favorite one I've read recently is Sand Castle Bay by Sherryl Woods. Can't wait to read Guardian!!
(Michele Hayes 7:32pm July 9, 2013)

i love second chance stories
(Denise Smith 7:51pm July 9, 2013)

Jolene, I like it when a second chance story leaves me feeling that way.
(Nancy Northcott 8:19pm July 9, 2013)

Charlette, thanks!
(Nancy Northcott 8:19pm July 9, 2013)

Yvonne, thank you!
(Nancy Northcott 8:19pm July 9, 2013)

Marcia, that's what I think, too. Sometimes we don't get something right the
first time around. Even the second time, Stefan and Mel have to work at it a bit!
(Nancy Northcott 8:20pm July 9, 2013)

Michele, I haven't read Sand Castle. I'll have to check it out!
(Nancy Northcott 8:21pm July 9, 2013)

Denise, I do, too!
(Nancy Northcott 8:21pm July 9, 2013)

I do enjoy second chance love stories. I couldn't think of one right off hand that I really liked, but I suddenly realized I was listening to my husband watching McClintock in the next room; that's a great second chance story!
(Janie McGaugh 8:34pm July 9, 2013)

Janie, would you believe I've never seen McClintock? I'll have to check it out!
(Nancy Northcott 8:40pm July 9, 2013)

Yep. Second chances are what I hope for especially if the
first ones don't work. It just sounds and seems more gracious
and mannerly.
(Alyson Widen 10:45pm July 9, 2013)

Sometimes a second chance is just what's needed, sometimes they work out great -- sounds like this one of those :)
(d Kenney 11:18pm July 9, 2013)

This book looks really good and I can totally picture myself in bed reading this one!
(Callie Stuck 12:00pm July 10, 2013)

Alyson, sometimes things work better the second time around, I think.
(Nancy Northcott 1:14am July 10, 2013)

d, I hope people will think Stefan and Mel were perfect for a second chance. :-)
(Nancy Northcott 1:14am July 10, 2013)

Thank you, Callie!
(Nancy Northcott 1:14am July 10, 2013)

Thanks to everyone who stopped by today. :-)
