Sandi Shilhanek | It's not just WHAT are You reading but how are you reading...

One thing that I know that everyone who comes to Fresh Fiction has in common is the love of reading. What I don’t know is whether or not those of us who use an electronic device are in the majority or the minority.

I for one have embraced the world of e-readers quite a while back. It’s not to say that I’ve totally given up my paper books, but I am slowly working my way to only bringing an electronic book into my home. When I bought my first device there weren’t many choices, and if I were to be truly honest I would say that that first device was actually my Palm Pilot, and not my first generation Kindle.

Since I bought that original Kindle I have bought other readers as well. Why would someone need more than one device? For me it was an easy answer…different readers have different features, and different formats, and I wanted to be able to access them all!

What about you? Have you embraced the world of electronic reading? What device do you prefer to read on if you do use an electronic device? Are you truly old fashioned and read only paper books? No matter what format you read how do you decide what to buy? Do you look online, get recommendations from friends, or browse the bookstore?

Regardless of how you read I wish you nothing but good reads for the coming year.

Merry Christmas Sandi!! I guess you can call me old-fashioned, because I prefer to hold a book in my hands and flip the pages. I like to admire the artwork involved in the covers of the books, too, although that's not what sways my decision. If one of my favorite authors has a book out, that is my first choice. After that, I tend to be a browser. I have come across many new authors that I normally would never have read that way. I've also gotten a couple of recommendations by friends that I have looked at and enjoyed. The only way I'd go electronic is if I won one or was given one as a gift. I hope in the future, the contests here are for winner's choice of e-book or print copy. I'm sure that several people miss out on the contest, as I have, for several days. Enjoy your day!!

I still love paperback or hard cover books but I am also a
great believer in e-books as I can carry so many with me when
I travel :D

I love e-books and I also have paperbacks and hardcovers. The thing I prefer to read is magazines off the shelf because I can pull the tabs inside and smell the perfume and sometimes they have samples on some of the pages. I know the e-book magazines are of beautiful color, I still prefer the ones by mail or from the shelf of a store. Merry Christmas Everyone!

FIRST LET ME WISH EVERYONE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS. I RECEIVED A KINDLE FIRE FOR THE HOLIDAY AND WILL SOON EMBARK ON E-READING. I DO LOVE THE FEELING OF HOLDING THE BOOK, DOGEARING THE PAGES AND EVEN UNDERLINING PASSAGES I ENJOY!

I am now retired and had been collecting books for ages tbr. so i am still wanting to read the paper ones. told my family "no e-readers yet". plus i don't know yet which one i would want....another reason to hold off. Plus have 2 big boxes for paperbacks, etc......
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL:)

I love books. I have collected first editions, hard
to find, and no matter the need for money, I
have never sold them. The smell of books, the
feel of paper between my fingers, that is
something I don't think I could ever give up. I
have gotten e books, read them at "work" on the
computer. I think that I might be behind the
times but the written word I think means Mich
more on paper.

Most of the books I buy are still traditional books--either second hand or at reduced cost at bookstores. But I buy e-books: the really old classics in French, German or English which are often 99 cents or free at Amazon and the new books if I can get them at a good price. I've read a few on my laptop but keep hoping to get a real e-reader. I can't carry the laptop around with me too easily. But it's just within the last year that I've gone to e-reading, though I've been running out of room for "real" books for the last 30 years.

To everyone: Froehliche Weihnacten! Joyeux Noel! Feliz Navidad! A Blessed Christmas!

I love my ereader. I never thought it would happen to me, but I much prefer ebooks to physical books. I'm almost completely switched over. I've had my original Nook since March 2010. I now mainly use a Nook Color and I also have a Kobo, which I bought during Borders going out of business sale. I still use all three for different reasons.

Happy Holidays, Sandi!

I read all - paperbacks, hardcover and e-books. Like most of here, I read a lot and so I am driven by the price. Can I find a better deal on the book in book or e-book form? If I started a series in book form, I tend to continue it in book form instead of e-book.
(Jill Hayden 5:42pm December 25, 2011)

I am not old fashioned but I have NO desire whatsoever to read ebooks. I want to own my own books which you don't really do with ebooks. I am sick and tired of publishers and authors and friends trying to push them off on people. I would rather reread the thousands of books I own over an ebook. I am not so sure I am too happy about the ramifications of ebooks either. In photography now this intellectual property rights has gone so far that it is illegal to photograph buildings because of the rights of the architect. One politician tried to make it a felony to photograph or paint farms, trying to restrict in the same way. While ebooks might be nice for authors, the whole movement really concerns me as a photographer so I prefer not to support ebooks period. I have started buying more hardcovers than paperbacks lately because I enjoy the craft of a real book -- the feel and smell of real paper and real ink. As a book reviewer, I often don't get to choose what I read. When I do, it tends to be by most favorite authors, sometimes friends, sometimes television news/interviews.
(Merri Crawford 6:13pm December 25, 2011)

oops, meant to add it is in France where the photographing buildings is illegal though it is heading that way here and has ramifications for artists.

I do not own an ereader, but have tried repeatedly to win one on the net. I have never even seen an ereader, have no idea which one is best; so for me it is read books by necessity. I can't imagine reading an ebook on the net, so I don't try f0r them if they are offered in author
contests. Maybe if I am ever successful at winning an ereader, I might love it. Who knows?
(Gladys Paradowski 8:37pm December 25, 2011)

Prior to receiving a Nook this summer, I only read print. As many authors are getting back the rights to earlier works, I am happy to be able to purchase them for my Nook. Because I read a lot, the price dictates whether I go with print or digital. I do find it frustrating when ebooks are not availble in a format that works for the Nook. I know there are PC apps for both Kindle and Kobo, but I dislike reading books on the computer.

Hey Sandi! I am still reserving judgement on my reading preference. I got the new cheap Kindle for my birthday and I am slowly adjusting to it. I don't have wifi so it is tedious to have to hook it up to computer to load my books, I can't run to the Mall coffee shop everyday to do it wifi. But my daughter gave me a hint to make it easier so next month I will explore that avenue. I still love holding a book in my hand and enjoy the smell of a new book. I will adjust as times goes but I may not go willingly down this path. Enjoyed your blog, see you in Jack's Bar.

A belated Merry Christmas. I am on my second Kindle. I lost
the first one. I do most of my reading on My Kindle for PC
because of the bigger screen making for faster reading. I
also have a Nook for PC. I am glad of that as my oldest son
gave me a B&N gift card for Christmas. I also received a
hard cover book for Christmas. I can still see myself
reading while sitting in my small rocking chair when I was
about nine. I had the job of shutting off the motor on Dad's
grain elevator. It would take about thirty minutes for a
run. I would read until it was time to push the button. Then
I would go out and play until the next load of wheat when I
would do the read and button push routine. When I was old
enough to drive the truck in the field I would read between
fills from the combine. I have never been bored if I have
something to read. If nothing else I even read product
labels to keep myself occupied.

An e-reader is okay, but I still like my books and it gives me such a wonderful experience to re-discover books in my physical collection which I can't do in an ereader. Like going to a book store and browsing.
(Fresh Fiction 2:27pm December 26, 2011)

I love, love, love my Kindle. My eyes had gotten so bad (and I'm not that old!) that I wasn't reading as much because it wasn't comfortable. Then my family convinced me to try a Kindle with it's e-ink technology, and since then I've triple my reading! I will stay with the black-and-white Kindle because if I go back to a backlit color screen it will hurt my eyes again. I buy hardback books as gifts now and then, but other than that I'm strictly a Kindle girl.
(Vickie Taylor 2:42pm December 26, 2011)

I got a Kindle earlier this year as a gift and love it. It has taken some time to get used to it - I do love print books but love the kindle ability to change font size! I still read printed books often but love the Kindle! Glad to be able to read both
(Barbs Ferris 6:49pm December 26, 2011)

I LOVE a book in my hand - however - I would LOVE to own different e-readers, as well - am also fascinated with the different features and formats - so, in anticipation of that blessed day when I do own at least ONE e-reader, I have quite a collection of e-books on my computer - LOL - and justify the purchases with the reasoning that they save space and paper!
(Felicia Ciaudelli 8:38am December 27, 2011)

I am a paper book reader and romance books are my addiction.
I do not have an ereader and really don't want one. I feel
that publishers are pushing us to digital formats to up
their profit and I really don't like it. I have a VERY old
and full computer that can't download anything more so
reading on my computer is NOT AN OPTION. Romance is usually
written in series and many books today are only presented in
e-format so I miss out. IF I had to get an ereader I would
go with NOOK as Amazon's proprietorial format also twists me
up. I really dislike being without options and a closed
format and purchasing/storage dead ends with Amazon just
makes me paranoid. I think Amazon is getting too big for
their britches and gaining too much control over the
industry.
(Lenna Hendershott 1:18pm December 27, 2011)

Still love to put bookmarks in books and pass them on to others. So e-readers are interesting, but not for me yet. I have read a few graphic novellas and fiction chapters in pdf on a pc.
(Alyson Widen 2:54pm December 27, 2011)

I'm old-fashioned in that I still prefer the paper version of books, but a lot of my favourite authors nowadays are only releasing in e-book format, so I'm being dragged, albeit kicking and screaming, into those formats.

Right now, I do not own any e-reader, but I do have all of the different apps that are available (for FREE!) on my laptop, so that's where I read the e-books I have. Not the most easy thing for my eyes as they age (I will admit that I need new glasses, however), but better than not reading my favourites at all!

Later,

Lynn
(Lynn Rettig 6:13pm December 27, 2011)

Give me a book to hold onto and I'm delirously happy. I bring books along everywhere and steal moments to whet my voracious appetite for reading.
