Donna Fletcher | Is it a Myth or a Curse?
July 6, 2011
Myths, curses, and legends have always fascinated me. Could some actually have
been based on truths or were most simply figments of the imagination? Naturally,
my interest had me researching which led me to Joseph’s Campbell’s book THE
POWER OF THE MYTH. Once I read it, my own imagination took flight. I had been searching for a
special heroine for Reeve MacAlpin the hero in my current book LOVED BY A WARRIOR. It’s
the second book in my four book Warrior King series, BOUND TO A WARRIOR being
the first. I got the story arc for the series just as I was finishing up the
Sinclare brothers’ series. The four MacAlpin brothers are on a mission to see
that the true king of Scotland claims the throne, one of them being the true
king. They each pledge not to fall in love until their mission is complete.
Naturally, that doesn’t happen. Love decides to find them whether they want it
to or not. I needed not only unique heroines for each brother, but extraordinary
ways to bring the couples together. Duncan, the hero in BOUND TO A WARRIOR found
himself chained to the heroine in the first half of the book. Reeve, the hero
from LOVED BY A WARRIOR,
is the fiercest warrior of the four brothers. He fears nothing. With such
confidence what challenge could I throw his way? What would be something that he
couldn’t battle with fists or weapons? Enter the
myth or more appropriately in this case… the curse. What if he met a woman who
if she dared to fall in love or wed, the man would die? What if he met a
death bride? How could he allow himself to fall in love with her when
surely he’d die? And how could she dare let him love her? A curse was born, a myth made, a legend told and strangely enough I heard a
story right after creating the death bride about such a myth. A Pilipino nurse
told me about the village she came from and how women whose husbands died soon
after they wed were considered cursed. So I ask you… what makes a myth, curse, legend? Is it born of the imagination or
is it born of fact? Or more appropriately… fear? Leave a comment about a myth or curse you’ve heard about and you’ll be entered
to win not only LOVED BY A
WARRIOR the second book in the Warrior King series but also the first book
BOUND TO A WARRIOR. And

Re: Donna Fletcher | Is it a Myth or a Curse?
I think myths and legends are formed to explain events that happen and a curse is a way of blaming bad luck. But I love stories that have them in - they are a great read. (Barbara Hanson 8:32am July 6, 2011)
A legend and a myths are stories handed down through the years of a certain person or event that happened and a curse, well I guess there always has to be a bad side to something.... (Dawn Staniszeski 8:50am July 6, 2011)
I always enjoyed reading mythology growing up (& still do enjoy it) unfortunately as people became more advance myths went from interesting stories to explain things or give hope to the modern urban legends which are often depressing or ridiculous. I'll stick with enjoying the good old myths. However, on the flip side, curses aren't generally blamed for things going wrong any more (at least not literally). (d Kenney 8:57am July 6, 2011)
I just watched the story of Medusa yesterday on the History channel. I knew of Medusa but I had never heard the full story before. Thanks for the giveaway, (Lisa Garrett 9:53am July 6, 2011)
Thanks - I'm looking for a good read. And I love how people who are "cursed" deal. (Beth Elder 10:18am July 6, 2011)
Myth, legends and curses all make good stories! :) They are ways for people to explain things, I guess... (May Pau 10:31am July 6, 2011)
I think it is born out of fear. If there isn't a practical explanation then the imagination runs wild. Sometimes it is a comet that is interpreted as a dragon or a god. I love reading about legends and curses. I studied several mythologies in college. So fascinating. (Stacie Deramo 11:11am July 6, 2011)
Myths and Legends I believe were used to explain the unexplainable, to prevent things from happening/ or certain questions raised to peak curiousosity, to control the believers, and as a form of social history storytelling. I am not dismissing any myth or legend, for I was raised to believe in quite a few. These "tales" were told to me from my grandmother, she was told by her mother..I told my children, who somewhat believe and half roll their eyes. They are part lesson/part superstition/part unexplained and all entrancing. I love the ideas that you put for your books, they sound amazing. (Carla Carlson 11:33am July 6, 2011)
What a wonderful blend, myths, legands and curses, makes for a fascinating story line! (Holly Caulfield 11:54am July 6, 2011)
Very interesting premises and conjectures. I'd love to find out what happens. (Sigrun Schulz 12:03pm July 6, 2011)
I don't know if it's a myth or curse, but I've always heard that if Mourning Doves sit on your rooftop, and especially if they make a nest in a tree by your house, that you're supposed to have bad luck. I've never cared much for the birds since, and try to shoo them away when I see them. I feel that if the myth is bad luck, it's made out of fear, especially if a person who tells you about it either experienced it or knows someone who has. As for curses, I'm not sure if people have the power to put curses on other people or not. I've never seen it happen. I love the cover of your book, and can't wait to read it!! The set sounds like a real page-turner!! (Peggy Roberson 12:05pm July 6, 2011)
myth and legends are fascinting to the imagination...a curse is fear to me....love reading about all three... (Leisa Prater 12:08pm July 6, 2011)
My Grandmother was all about myths & legends. I catch myself quoting her often, which feels odd, as we never got along. She once told me about a ghost light, in southern Missouri, that others claimed was a myth, but she had seen. She insisted it had to have a real cause & refused to believe in ghost, but admitted she did not know what it was. I always wanted to go see it. (Felina Pence 12:18pm July 6, 2011)
I think it can be a combination of both. As a child, I went to a campt where they warned us of a monster in the lake. I had nightmares all summer. The point was to keep us away from a dangerous drain in the lake. I was petrified. It did its job. (Renee Brown 12:21pm July 6, 2011)
I think they are all born out of fear of the unknown. I never believed in curses or myth's, I believe we all make our own luck, good or bad. (Frances Namuth 12:27pm July 6, 2011)
The Power of the Myth certainly gives us food for thought. Blessings, Marjorie (Marjorie Carmony 12:30pm July 6, 2011)
One myth (?) is the story of space ships coming down to earth. I think the tales are based on fear. Another myth is about frogs giving you warts. (Cathy Phillips 12:41pm July 6, 2011)
I think a myth is in the same catagory as 'an old wives tale'...unrelated circumastance surround an event and before you know it, the two are linked.
That being said, I love the idea of your books. They sound compelling. (Robin McKay 1:14pm July 6, 2011)
Legends are my favorite of the three. Outlaws, heros, saints and sinners all have interesting stories attached to them. They may not be ture but so much fun to hear. Curses are evil and I don't believe that people can bestow curses on other people. Maybe. (Kathleen Yohanna 1:43pm July 6, 2011)
I think a myth is something that we want to believe where a legend is something that is fact. As for a curse, I think it's just an excuse for something unsavory. As for fear, that's a whole 'nother topic but I think we fear what we can't explain in all of the above. Good luck and happy writing! (Tracie Travis 1:45pm July 6, 2011)
I see myths and legends as mysterious and unknown... things of the imagination... but curses I see come from fear... I am very interested in reading your book, thanks for sharing! (Colleen Conklin 1:47pm July 6, 2011)
Well Donna, there are some who believe in Voodoo. They tie together small bones and chicken feet into little bundles, then leave at the front door of their nemesis. Sounds like a way to get rid of the left over from a good chicken dinner. Fear can be created easily if the mind is guilty. I'll be reading your book to see how you deal with curses, myths and legends. (Rosemary Simm 2:43pm July 6, 2011)
I think legends started a a real experience and were embellished after time, myths were just stories to explain mysterious things and curses were used to explain bad things happening. I can't wait to read about your warriors. (Patti Paonessa 2:45pm July 6, 2011)
i think the curse i have heard the most about is the "evil eye".according to folklore it is suppose to be something that is cast on you by an evil witch. your books sound wonderful and i can't wait to read them. (Tammy Ramey 2:51pm July 6, 2011)
There is a myth/legend in the area where I grew up about a hill that rises from the meandering river and fields below and a "headless horseman" who appears in the dark of the moon! I'm sure that this legend had some basis in fact long ago, but the old abandoned road that winds up the hill does look very spooky - even in broad daylight! There is also an old native American cemetery not far from the hill with it's own spooky stories! (Marguerite Guinn 3:01pm July 6, 2011)
I think they are all based on some fact and things get possibly exaggerated in the telling or like in that children's game "phone" that it gets changed from person to person. Lots are probably based on fear too. As a people, I think we want to understand everything and if we don't, we tend to make things up lol. (Jeanne Sheats 3:45pm July 6, 2011)
Myths and curses are fascinating and I like seeing them in books. They make them all the more interesting. In some cultures it is believed that it is unlucky to take a picture with three people in it. (Na S 3:45pm July 6, 2011)
Cannot wait to read the newest one! (Simone Neubauer 3:52pm July 6, 2011)
The only bad myths I known ,are of black cats, don't walk under a ladder, ect.. A good myth ,find a penny and all the day you'll have go luck. (Deb Pelletier 3:59pm July 6, 2011)
Myths and legends are stories rift with superstitions while curses are a way of tripping up another person by verbally claiming something will or won't happen in the future. It reminds me of the old saying, "Curses, foiled again." (Alyson Widen 4:02pm July 6, 2011)
I think both fear and truth are the basis for myths and legends. (Vikki Parman 4:03pm July 6, 2011)
Interesting topic! Love reading all the comments! I really don't know myself. I have never really thought about myths and curses. There is always a bit of truth to most stories right? (Johanna Jochum 4:15pm July 6, 2011)
I like myths and legends. (Wilma Frana 4:49pm July 6, 2011)
I would say that for the most part myths and legends are born of fear. When we think back through time about both of them, we realize that fear is what keeps most of these going as people are afraid of being cursed or have bad luck unless they do.
Connie Fischer [email protected] (Connie Fischer 4:55pm July 6, 2011)
Wow, love all the comments. They've got my imagination churning. Hmmm... a series about cursed heroes just might be in the making :) Thanks much!

A curse is usual placed by some "one" while a Myth is a story that has some basis in fact. (Marcelle Cole 6:02pm July 6, 2011)
Ok, I can't wait. Rather it be a curse than a myth. So much more interesting, like who placed the curse and how many people are affected by the curse (Constance Biller 6:19pm July 6, 2011)
A myth is a story told so many times you either believe it's true or it scares you silly.....it all depends (Doris Stewart 6:26pm July 6, 2011)
This is one I really want to read, I love books about myths and curses, especially in that time period. (Joyce Bruner 6:39pm July 6, 2011)
Myths and curses are explanations for seemingly inexplicable or irrational occurrences. Such beliefs actually can affect outcomes and events into the future. However, if one does not subscribe, one may disprove. I was born on Friday the 13th and am entering this contest. (Carla Schuller 7:10pm July 6, 2011)
Is a superstition like a myth? I've always heard you can't tickle a baby on his feet or he'll stutter. (Lisa Kendall 8:16pm July 6, 2011)
I think curses are caused by superstition and that love is the cure for all curses. (Jody Hollenbeck 8:33pm July 6, 2011)
Myths, legends and curses grew out of a way for people to explain their fear, superstitions & even traditions. Something happened & then it grew. Fascinating topic!! (Mary Preston 8:53pm July 6, 2011)
I think there is always some kernal of truth, some basis for the start of the myth, curse or legend. Some came from bards or storytellers. Some were used to try to control people. There really interesting ones are where there are similar stories in multiple cultures. (Diane Sallans 10:03pm July 6, 2011)
Love mythology! (Mary C 10:18pm July 6, 2011)
I think myths and curses are peoples attempts to make sense of something so they might protect themselves in the future. I love the idea of Death brides. Did you experience a twilight zone moment when the nurse told you her story? (Linda Andrews 11:03pm July 6, 2011)
I think myths are born from fact but then becomes embellished. (Christine Dionne 11:19pm July 6, 2011)
One myth I've heard is if your ear hurts someone is talking about you. (Kara Lepard 11:21pm July 6, 2011)
One myth is that if you hear an owl call your name then you will soon die. I actually read a book using that myth and it was interesting. (Ginger Hinson 11:32pm July 6, 2011)
Great question! I have no idea. I have always heard that when you die, your ancestors come to bring you over to other side. I never believed this until I had a near death experience and saw a room full of people dressed in old fashioned dress. Later than summer I saw an old picture of a woman who led the crowd, and it turns out it was my Grandmother's Grandmother! (MaryAnne Banks 11:34pm July 6, 2011)
I have no personal experience with myths, legends or curses but I do know any of the above would make a good plot twist. Perhaps these books will make me look at things differently. Thank you for giving us such pleasure. (Sandra Spilecki 2:11pm July 7, 2011)
Beware of what you wish for & you shall get it......myth or curse, but I certainly do believe in the concept. (Susan Coster 6:37pm July 8, 2011)
