Sandi Shilhanek | Reflections of the Summer of 2010

Now that Labor Day has passed, and for the majority of us summer has come to an official close it’s time to perhaps reflect back and see what was the best thing about the summer.

I was lucky to have many special memories in the summer of 2010. I know there’s no way to tell anyone which one was more special than any other one. My oldest son announced his decision to elope with his fiancée, and then announced that early next year my husband and I would be embracing our first grandchild. No clue yet as to the sex of the child, but my daughter in law is convinced it’s a girl, and my son convinced it’s a boy. We shall see.

Then I had the terrific opportunity to attend RWA in Orlando and meet so many of my favorite authors such as Robyn Carr, Tara Taylor Quinn, Christie Ridgway, and so many more. Then I had the chance to meet authors I’ve yet to read, but am now anxious to such as Carolyn Brown, Leigh Michaels, and Tessa Dare.

Finally I spent Labor Day weekend with my family celebrating my sister’s oldest child’s wedding. It was the first time in about three years that my sister, brother, mother, and I have all been together at the same time. If that’s not a cause for celebration I’m not sure what is!

When your friends, and family ask you what you thought was so special about the summer of 2010 what are you going to tell them? Will it be a trip you took? A person you met? A book you read that made a lasting impression? Tell all, because inquiring minds need to know.

Until next time happy page turning!

Re: Sandi Shilhanek | Reflections of the Summer of 2010

The Summer of 2010 was over the top Special because I just got back from a fabulous luxury trip to Bora Bora. What a beautiful place and it is my Paradise found.

This past summer I was able to speak on the phone with a cousin I lost touch with about 30 years ago!! I also spoke with a new friend for the first time, and it's like we've known each other forever!! Since there's a lot of wooded land where we live, I was able to enjoy and observe more wildlife and flowers than I have in previous years. I also was able to meet more new and interesting people. I made some "me" time and took that time to read and to knit some items which were shipped off to some special people in my life. It was a full and fulfilling summer!! The fall should be just as full for me.

I was adopted at birth. This summer, at age 55, I met my siblings for the first time. My birth parents are both deceased, but I had the wonderful opportunity to meet my brothers and sisters. It was a dream come true.

Wow! It sounds like everyone had a really truly memorable summer of 2010! I hope that we can all have equally special memories for the rest of the year.

I attended my brother's wedding. Then got swept up in some family drama. As much as I love my family, I'm glad I don't live any closer to them. *shudders*

And then while I was visiting, I caught the flu so I spent about a week and a half miserable and by myself while my boyfriend went up to the mountains without me (he had to sub for me as well as do his own work).

So, aside from seeing family at the wedding, August wasn't that great for me.

The rain. After such a dry period it is all anyone can talk about around here.

Spending some quality time with my husband: he had started a new job last year ans had no vacation time, so this year we were together.

Hi Sandi--After a spring and early summer dealing with some health issues, I was able to enjoy good health most of the summer. My dh and I helped take care of our two grandbabies so our dd and sil could prepare their house to sell. Over the Labor day weekend they moved into their new home and also got a buyer for the old one. As always we enjoyed lots of time spent with family. We also took a short trip to celebrate our 37th anniversary.

Sounds like most everyone had a decent summer, of course some had better than others--BoraBora sounds like a good time to me! How wonderful Robin-former DIL has been able to connect with birth mother and siblings too, she was only in early 30s though.

We didn't do anything special but it was a nice 3 months. We watch our 2 yr old grandson most days for the afternoon-early evening but this summer DIL worked part-time so we had a lot of free time - it was nice! but we do look forward to him coming too. Congrats Sandi I don't think there are words for that special feeling we have for grandchildren.

I did get some crocheting done and got all the "stuff" together to start machine quilting--all my Christmas presents, maybe LOL

Happy Fall!
(Barbs Ferris 7:13pm September 9, 2010)

This wasn't a very exciting summer.
We pretty much spent it working on
our house and yard. Every time we
turn around, it seems there is
something else major we need to work
on. Fall is our favorite time and we
have a few trips planned.
I had planned to go to RWA this year.
We made reservations (the
nonrefundable kind) in Nashville
before the flood. So I spent RWA week
in Nashville reading, trying to catch up
on my emails, and watching my
grandson and daughter swim.
We are heading to Orlando in October.
I am looking forward to the Harry
Potter section of Universal's Adventure
Island.

The summer of 2010 was special because my sister visited from Florida and we all got together for a ceremony in the park and a little hike.

This wasn't the best summer for my husband Tom and I. His Mom broke her hip on June 15. She contracted MRSA and had to have the hip redone. Luckily we were able to get her through clearing up the MRSA and healing up the hip, but now she has c.diff which is very dangerous to older people they can die from it.
She has had it twice, and hasn't gotten it gone long enough to be released to go back to her apartment in the retirement village. She is 87 and legallly blind has to have oxygen all of the time. My husband and I have spent the summer pretty much running through hospitals, emergency rooms, rehab place, usually twice a day to keep her moral up so she'll do the rehab work and get out of there. Unfortunately they think she may have the infection c.diff once again and won't get released tomorrow as scheduled. She is really bummed and so are we!
(Brenda Rupp 11:36pm September 9, 2010)

Brenda, I'm so sorry to hear about your
MIL. Hope things improve soon!

IN MY COUNTRY SUMMER IS EVERYDAY THROUGH OUT THE YEAR.
(Amanda Edmond 6:35am September 10, 2010)

My summer of 2010 was a whirlwind! DH & I took a 2-week cruise to Alaska, and a week later, left on a 2-week trip to England! It was the first time we've spent much time with my Mother, brother and s-in-l and it was so good. My family was stationed in England in the '50's and we've always wanted to go back. With a 7=year age difference between us, it was a bonding time for my brother and I.
(Sherry Moran 10:12am September 10, 2010)

I had a quiet summer and got to read quite a few great books like The Search by Nora Roberts, Pray for Silence by Linda Castillo, Demon Hunts by C.E. Murphy and Instant Temptation by Jill Shalvis.
(Joyce Mandle 6:31pm September 10, 2010)

Wow Sandi, you had some big things happening this summer. I wish you and your family the best. On my wish list is to attend the big Romance get together in Florida one of these days.
As to my favorite part of this past summer was seeing my family for the first time in 8 years. I hadn't seen my only living Uncle since my momma passed away. It was a blessing to see him and all my cousins. Our family has had many deaths and we must rejoice in the family we have left. It was our first road trip as a family, my kids and husband that is and we made it happily. Though the trip home was hurried, we were so ready to be out of the car. hehe
(Chris Jones 9:20pm September 10, 2010)

It has been a memorable summer. I've
spent a lot of time with new friends, but
at the worst time of my families life. My
new friends of have helped me through
this bad time.
(Sue Ahn 1:27pm September 11, 2010)

Sara, Bora Bora was heavenly. I was
thrilled to have the opportunity to go
and felt really blessed every second
there. It was gorgeous and the people
were wonderful. I hope that you get to
go to your dream place like I did.
