Sandi Shilhanek | Military Romances Featuring the Navy

This week I was invited to attend a party for a friend’s son who was home on
leave from the Navy.
This got me to thinking about books that involve different branches of the
military, and which ones
I might have read that might not be the typical ones that people think of when
they think of
β€œmilitary” books.

One of my favorite books that features a Navy family is The Ocean Between Us by Susan Wiggs. As I read the story I was totally involved in the hardships of being a navy family. When the end of the book came I was crying, and trying to hide those tears from my family. Debbie Macomber also has a complete series of books that feature different members of the Navy. While I now that I read each of these books I really have to be honest and say that it’s been many many years, and I don’t fully remember what they were about! I know that I enjoyed them, but that’s about as critical as I can be. You can also find military heroes in category romances. One that I read was Sealed and Delivered by Jill Monroe. I enjoyed this book because it gave a peek into how Seals are trained. The downside to this is it was a Harlequin Blaze and therefore if you’re interested you’re probably going to have to check the library or a friend!

So I’ve discussed one branch of the military today. Do you like to read
military romances? If so
which branch do you prefer? Do you have one favorite author? One favorite
book? Curious minds
need to know!

Until next week happy page turning!

Re: Sandi Shilhanek | Military Romances Featuring the Navy

I love to read about the Seals. But all of our Military are great so I have read several series.

I can't say that I've ever read a military romance. I'm new to this genre of books, but I'm slowly learning about the different authors and their books from reading their blogs. Thank you so much for enlightening me daily with the different books to put on my list!! I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the blogs!!
(Peggy Roberson 9:58am August 29, 2010)

Suzanne Brockmann's Navy Seals are my favorite. In Christian fiction, I've enjoyed Dee Henderson's military books.
(Maria Munoz 10:36am August 29, 2010)

I really haven't read any military romance unless "Dear John" counts, lol. I wouldn't even know where to begin with authors that write them. I am so clueless, lol.

My dad was in the Navy on a cruiser for ten years. He
would be gone for 9 months to exotic (to him & my mom)
places, China, Japan, Hawaii.
As a kid, we loved to look
through his annuals that had
pics of these places and
listen to him talk about the
people and places he saw. So,
I can hardily say it's the
Navy for me.

love military men hoo rah:)
(April Strength 11:50am August 29, 2010)

I enjoy reading military romances. My husband served in the Air Force for 24 years, so I guess I am partial to AF stories.
(Robin McKay 11:53am August 29, 2010)

Some of the authors that I read have written about a character who has served or is serving in the military. I've enjoyed the books. I'm looking forward to reading Cat Johnson's Red,Hot & Blue Series.
(Leni Kaye 11:55am August 29, 2010)

I like any well written book no matter
which branch of the military it is
covering. My husband was a career
Air Force man. I also read Macomber's
Navy books. My current series is
Suzanne Brockmann's series on Navy
Seals (and FBI) is my current favorite.
Harlequin has several series in their
Intrigue as well as other lines that deal
with the military.

I do enjoy military romances. I have great admiration for anyone in the military, so they make great heroes/heroines for romance novels.
(Cheryl Castings 12:46pm August 29, 2010)

I enjoy military romances, and want to take a moment to thank all of our military personnel, both active, retired, and deceased. Bless you always.
(Lynne Mauro 1:02pm August 29, 2010)

I am a military wife, and love to read about any of the branches. My husband was a 30 year Army soldier. I like to read about the Special Ops, Seals, Rangers any and all as they ALL great! and so are the men and women who serve!
(JoAnn White 1:13pm August 29, 2010)

I love Marliss Melton's series featuring SEALs.
(Jane Cheung 1:18pm August 29, 2010)

I love Debbie Macomber & Suzanne Brockmann's military books!
(Colleen Conklin 1:33pm August 29, 2010)

I just read The Homecoming by Joann Ross. The hero was an ex SEAL and some of the other characters were ex-Marines. The next story in that series includes ex-military charactersas well. I love Linda Howard's Mackenzie's stories about a Navy and Air Force family.
(Jill Hayden 1:46pm August 29, 2010)

Hi Sandi--I finally found my way back here after several weeks. I would recommend Catherine Mann's books to anyone who likes military romance. She has a whole series called Wingman Warriors featuring Air Force flyboys. (These are SRS.) She also has a Dark Ops series she writes for Berkley which is good. I also read Merline Lovelace who has written a lot of military romances featuring woman in the Air Force. Either author is a sure bet!
(Mary Perry 2:26pm August 29, 2010)

Military stories make me think of history class and also about all those who have served their country. I like a man in uniform who's earned his stripes or is on his way to getting them.
(Alyson Widen 3:03pm August 29, 2010)

I have read all of Debbie Macombers & Joann Ross~but I am here for you please enter me your contest, I would love to be here for you & read more books thanks
(Kate Goldin 3:39pm August 29, 2010)

Any military heroes make good stories. My father in law was a vet, my brother in law is retired from the Forces and a nephew is still serving now. They are to be admired for their dedication!
(Diane Sadler 4:09pm August 29, 2010)

I have read Vicki Hinze's military romances and a few others. Also Dee Henderson has written some great ones.
(Jackie Robertson 4:29pm August 29, 2010)

I don't think I have ever read any Military books but would love to. I will give it a try.
(Lisa Garrett 4:29pm August 29, 2010)

I love military romances. Suzanne Brockmann and Catherine Mann.
(Maude Allen 4:41pm August 29, 2010)

Navy or Coast Guard (since I love the ocean)
(Shannon Scott 4:51pm August 29, 2010)

I do love a man in uniform. There is something romantic about the sea as well.
(Mary Preston 5:51pm August 29, 2010)

Army, Navy, special forces, doesn't matter to me!! I love them all. I love Christina Skye's series, Catherine Mann, Dee Davis, just to name a few!
(Martha Lawson 6:25pm August 29, 2010)

I enjoy most military fiction (not just romances). However, being a Susan Wiggs and Debbie Macomber fan I especially enjoyed their military stories.
(Mildred Mayo 7:05pm August 29, 2010)

I'm an Army brat so (Dad was Airborne Spec.Forces~green beret) I'm partial to Army. Hubby was AF & brother recently retired from the AF EOD....I think they're all just awesome. The Seals seem to be really popular right now though.
(Ivy Truitt 7:06pm August 29, 2010)

It is hard to pick a favorite of any of the services, they are all great. In my family my dad & several uncles served in WWII. A couple in the Army, a Marine & my dad was in the Army Air Corp! My heart belongs to all of them. I think the Coast Guard doesn't get as much recognition, it might be fun to read more about them. There are so many authors that have written great military romances and I love reading them. Please keep them coming. Merline Lovelace served as career Air Force before retiring which lead to writing. Catherine Mann is married to an Air Force man. The reason I mention those two is that you know their books are authentic. I enjoy the fiction stories and the hunky men in them.
(Donna McClure 7:38pm August 29, 2010)

I'm an ex-wife of a sailor - so I would still be partial to the Navy, as I was part of that world for 8 years. I might have to check out the suggestions that you have above.
(Kristi Herbrand 7:39pm August 29, 2010)

I love Marines! My brother in law and sister were both Marines. I love reading about military men in general they make such great characters for books!
(Brenda Rupp 10:13pm August 29, 2010)

I love military heros ok most heros but it is fun when thay have special training to make them even more of a hunk.
(Vickie Hightower 11:56pm August 29, 2010)

I do like military romances and all the different branches.
(Maureen Emmons 6:10am August 30, 2010)

I lived a "military romance". I met my husband when he was in the Navy in 1969 and we were married less than a month later. When he got out we moved to New England from where he was stationed in Florida but than he joined the Reserves. I thought it was dangerous while he was on active duty but often in the Reserves he was closer to the action flying on a P-3 than when he was on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. When we were going out I used to tell all my friends to marry a sailor because they may sail the world but you get all the love and devotion. I don't often read military themed romance but I found those hard times of seperation has made our marriage and our love during our 40+ years all that much more strong and really kept up connected during good times and bad.
(Jeanne Miro 10:49am August 30, 2010)

SEALs are my favorites to read about but I like to read about all the branches of the military. My favorite author for military books would be Suzanne Brockmann, but there are many others, Catherine Mann, Marliss Melton, and Cindy Gerard.
(Kelli Jo Calvert 11:29am August 30, 2010)

I don't favor any particular branch of the military in my reading.
Some of the most recent ones I've read that have military in them are from Sandra Hill. Some of her recent Viking time travel books have had Navy SEALS as one of the main characters.
(Carol Cobun 4:34am August 31, 2010)

i woul like to be lucky winner of the book i have read a lot of book and would love to rad yours
(Desiree Reilly 12:14pm September 6, 2010)

All military men are so brave, and the families must go through such turmoil. 1st being proud of their military person, then having to accomodate all of the trials of being a military family.
(Joanne Reynolds 7:18am September 6, 2010)

I have read all of Deb's Navy series and do enjoy military books - am currently reading Joann Ross' the Homecoming. Don't favor any particular branch.
(Pat Lieberman 7:27am September 6, 2010)

I've read and enjoyed many military stories over the years. Merline Lovelace and Lindsey McKenna were the first authors I read with military heroes and heroines. Diana Palmer also had a lot of ex military men. Recently I've read Christina Skye, Christina Dodd, Catherine Mann and Suzanne Brockmann and Debbie Macomber.

I have no military back ground or friends or relatives in the military. I will read about any branch. No favorites.

Favorite book(s) Lindsey McKenna's Trayhern family series!!!
(Laurie Gommermann 7:54am September 6, 2010)

I love the special forces - well all the forces really if I am honest. Lora Leigh's books have great heroes in too.
(Barbara Hanson 8:10am September 6, 2010)

I've never read a military story. The distance seems like it would be difficult to capture well.
(Pam Howell 11:26am September 6, 2010)

Have enjoyed a few military novels, with a grandson in the Army i'd have to say that's my favorite branch to read about.
(Sheila True 12:32pm September 6, 2010)

I appreciate all of the military novels, but Debbie Macomber's was very special.
Blessings,
Marjorie
(Marjorie Carmony 1:39pm September 6, 2010)

I've also enjoyed some military stories. Can't think of any right off hand. Guess I need to read some more...hehe!!!

Found the right page! I love military novels. Suzanne Brockmann's series turned me on to theis line. Exciting, sexy and romantic!
(Patsy Nelson 1:59pm September 6, 2010)

I have always been for the Air Force. Although most of my friends are from the Army including my instructor. I love reading military romances.

I love reading Lindsay McKenna, Maureen Child, Robyn Carr, and Rhonda Nelson (just to name a few).

My favorite book-to-date is The Soldier by Rhonda Nelson. It's a story about Adam who is the injured soldier, trying to find himself in his military career after the lost of his leg, and his relationship with his best friend Winnie. Rhonda has really captured the torment of Adam but with the support of Winnie, he was able to move on with his life and create a life with her. This book has really capture my heart because it made me cried and cheered for Adam and Winnie.
(Kai Wong 2:15pm September 6, 2010)

I've read both Brockmann and Macomber, and am always open to reading more - both by them and others with military involvement.
(Jl Welling 2:15pm September 6, 2010)

I don't usually read military stories. I've tried but they make me sad.
(Elizabeth Parzino 3:54pm September 6, 2010)

I agree with Elizabeth, most military stories I have read made me sad.
