Well, I'm kind of excited. My newest book, UNSEEN, a thriller, debuted
on March 31st. UNSEEN
is my first solo effort as a romantic-suspense writer and it's definitely a wild
and twisted tale. A real departure from the mystery novels I've been writing.
(And to those loyal fans who've contacted me in fear that I've abandoned Jane,
Dwayne, The Binkster and the rest of the gang from the Jane Kelly mystery
series: They'll be back, I swear! )
So, how did UNSEEN come to be?
Well, a long time ago, in a galaxy far,far away, I read an article in Time
Magazine about how young mothers were making money writing romance novels.
I told my sister, fellow writer Lisa Jackson, about the article and, as young
mothers ourselves, we both sat down and started writing, writing, writing. It's
how both of our careers began.
Now, I'm a grandmother. A grandmother! Yikes, rewind. That
happened fast! I may need to digress a moment. . . .
Everyone told me I would love being a grandmother. As the mother of an only
daughter, I really wondered.. They might be right. Maybe. I mean, I
had one child and she's always been everything to me. Never had any other
kids, so.. . . .really? Sydney came along in August 2007. First she was a
little blob, like all newborns. At two months she responded to the music and
flashing colors on Dancing With The Stars. (I know this because I have
many photos from that period, and I've got a wine glass in my hand in every one.
Hmmm.....) Then Sydney's personality started emerging and now, well, she's
everything I was promised in a granddaughter and more. She lives in southern
California and I'm in the Northwest, so I've been burning up the friendly skies
to go see her, my daughter and my son-in-law. Luckily, I have a job that
travels with me, so I ensconce myself in the guest bedroom and type away on my
laptop.
Which brings me back to UNSEEN because most of its
story was written in that guest bedroom. Creating UNSEEN was one of the best
writing experiences I've had in a while. And there was time for fun, too.
(Check out the picture of me and El Syd on the boat.)
Now my daughter is pregnant with baby girl #2. Also due in August. In fact her
projected due date is my mother's birthday -- my mother who passed away this
last January. Wouldn't that be fabulous? My newest granddaughter born on her
great-grandmother's birthday? I am a fiction writer but even I wouldn't put
that in a book. Too contrived.
But it could happen.....it really could.
And I've got another thriller to write, so I'm thinking about taking over the
guest bedroom again this fall. . . .with more wine and Dancing With The
Stars.
Hope you enjoy UNSEEN!

Our daughter was born on my mother's birthday - and they celebrated together for 27 years!

My grandson was just born on March 13. Although he doesn't share anyone else's birthday in the family, his special day is definitely unique as this year, it fell on a Friday! Must mean lots of luck for the little guy.

I have been reading yours and Lisa's books since your first Silhouette. Loved you then, and love you now. There has definitely been a change in voices for both of you!
Your granddaughter is beautiful. You're lucky that you can be with her so much.
