A two-in-one edition of THE TEMPORARY WIFE and A PROMISE OF SPRING, two of Mary Balogh's older Regency romances, was published earlier this year. Although A PROMISE OF SPRING is a stand-alone, it is also a spin-off of the WEB trilogy--THE GILDED WEB, WEB OF LOVE, and THE DEVIL'S WEB. There was a couple in those books in which the wife was ten years older than the husband. When other characters wondered about the nature of their relationship and whether or not they were happy, I began to wonder too. I got more than usually passionately involved in the writing of their story. That two-in-one is readily available. for purchase. The WEB trilogy was republished a few years ago with new covers. THE GILDED WEB: When the Earl of Amberley discovers Alexandra Purnell trussed up on a bed in his London town house early one morning, he knows he must marry her even though the fault lies with one of his younger brother's pranks gone awry. But Alexandra is not so easily persuaded, even after she has agreed to a temporary betrothal, and even after Amberley discovers that his heart is involved.

WEB OF LOVE: Ellen Simpson loses her beloved husband in the Battle of Waterloo and takes comfort from her grief with his severely wounded best friend, Dominic, Lord Eden, (younger brother of the Earl of Amberley) whom she has nursed back to health. But after a mindless interlude of peace and joy together, cut off from the real world beyond their doors, they are suddenly reminded of reality and consumed by guilt over what they have done. They have to traverse a long and rocky road before they can forgive themselves sufficiently to seek lasting happiness with each other.

THE DEVIL'S WEB: James Purnell (Alexandra's brother) returns home from a few years in Canada. He intends to go back there to marry, but in England he meets Lady Madeline Raine again (Amberly and Eden's sister) and the attraction and antagonism they had felt for each other before he left returns in full force. They both look forward to his leaving, and they both dread it. And then something happens to keep him in England and to throw them more closely into company with each other.

After reading the WEB books, or even before, you may enjoy reading A PROMISE OF SPRING in its new two-in-one binding with THE TEMPORARY WIFE. And the latter book will be an added bonus for you. It is a stand-alone novel but is often named by readers as their favourite among my older Regency romances. A duke's son marries the plainest, dullest woman he can find just to spite his father, from whom he is estranged but who now insists that he marry a woman of the duke's choosing. The son's intention is to pension off his wife once his father has been well and truly annoyed. However, his wife soon proves to be neither plain nor dull, and she takes on the herculean task of sorting out the problems of her husband's dysfunctional family before disappearing to return to her own family. Inconveniently for both, however, husband and wife have fallen in love with each other.
