Celebrating 15 Years of Boas & Tiaras
Readers / June 21, 2017

Boas & Tiaras has come a long way since its humble (yet fabulous) beginning. What began in 2002 as a group of 6 readers enjoying tea in Duncanville has evolved into an annual event that draws readers and authors from all over the country. On June 10, more than 50 book-loving ladies gathered at the historic Adolphus hotel in downtown Dallas to celebrate Fresh Fiction’s 15th annual Boas & Tiaras tea! Glistening chandeliers, fine china, and sparkling tiaras made everyone feel like a queen—and better yet, lively conversation and abundant laughter made everyone feel like family. For any of you who were not able to join us (and for those of you who attended and want to re-live the fun), read on for a taste of the Boas experience! Before tea was served, guests perused a selection of 15 raffle baskets, proceeds benefiting Genesis Women’s Shelter, and delighted in the gift bags provided by our host authors. Every table was surrounded by ladies dressed to the nines, ready to chat about all things bookish. Tea was served course by course, elegantly plated and attentively brought by waiters in crisp suits. Sandwiches arrived first, dazzling us with flavors like orange zested…

Why It’s Easy to Fall in Love With a Small Town
Readers / June 1, 2017

The first romance novel I remember reading is DARK PRINCE by Christine Feehan. Christine Feehan’s world of vampires, Carpathians, and magic blew my mind and got me hooked on paranormal romance. Next up, Victoria Alexander, Lisa Kleypas, and Julia Quinn enticed me into reading historical romance with jaunty tales about dukes, rakes, balls, and bluestocking heroines. I had never really been interested in contemporary romances until discovering Jill Shalvis, and then later on Susan Mallery. Jill Shalvis’ Lucky Harbor series and Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold made me a fan of contemporary romance and, specifically, romances set in a small town. I suppose it’s not really a surprise that I would adore these types of romances, since the small-town factor is exactly one of the things I’ve always loved about cozy mysteries. There are a few fictional towns that I would love to live in: Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold, Kendra Leigh Castle’s Harbor Cove, Kate Angell’s beach town Barefoot William, Carolyn Brown’s Dry Creek, and LuAnn McLane’s Cricket Creek. After reading SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE by Jill Shalvis and ALL SUMMER LONG by Susan Mallery, I was charmed by small town life that includes hardworking citizens, longstanding friendships, and the hint of romance…

Countdown to Boas & Tiaras: 5 Things to Know About the Adolphus Hotel
Readers / June 1, 2017

Fresh Fiction’s annual Boas & Tiaras tea is all about making you feel like a book-loving queen, and there’s no better place for a royal tea than Dallas’ original luxury hotel. As we continue our countdown to Boas 2017, this week’s Fun Facts are all about our beautiful venue: the historic Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas. In 1912, Adolphus Busch, founder of Anheuser Busch, built the Adolphus hotel as a show of Texas hospitality and world-class grandeur. The 22-floor hotel was the tallest building in Texas for a decade, and it has undergone several multi-million dollar expansions and renovations in the years since, keeping it at the peak of posh. Our beloved venue has been: Named one of the top ten hotels in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler Added to the National Register of Historic Places Declared an official landmark by the Dallas Landmark Commission Honored to host countless distinguished guests like George H.W. Bush and Queen Elizabeth II Afternoon tea at the Adolphus is a rich tradition itself. The tea service’s custom china contains elements that evoke the hotel’s story, like the Anheuser Busch eagle and engravings of the hotel’s Beaux Arts style architecture. (And the tea…

Amazing April Titles — Musicians, Artists, Shifters, Lords and Royalty
Author Guest , Readers / April 28, 2016

As a confirmed book addict, who marks the calendar when my favorite authors come out with new books, I was taken aback by just how many long-awaited books had April release dates. After being sufficiently wowed, I decided to undertake a month-long book odyssey. Crucial TV-viewing was interrupted, proper tribute to the family cat was put on hold, and other highly important daily activity came to a screeching halt while I wallowed in romantic literary delicacies. It was hard, but somebody had to do it. My all-time favorite romance writers, Cynthia Eden and Jennifer Ashley, are both very versatile authors who tackle stories in a wide array of genres and sub-genres. Both authors are also very prolific without sacrificing quality for the sake of quantity. Both BITTER BLOOD by Cynthia Eden and WHITE TIGER by Jennifer Ashley feature shape shifter heroes but the settings and journey that both sets of characters take differ. I love Cynthia Eden’s shadowy New Orleans noir with a paranormal twist. Eden’s “Blood and Moonlight” trilogy has an exciting mix of dangers around every corner, characters that experience a constantly changing reality, and paranormal villains in all their fangy glory. However, in spite of that turmoil,…

‘Exclusive’: Live From the Plano Book Club with Mari Madison
Readers / March 17, 2016

On St. Patrick’s Day Eve our Plano book club hosted author Mari Madison, who many readers will recognize as Mari Mancusi. Her newest book, the first in a trilogy, is a contemporary romance set in the exciting world of a TV newsroom. JUST THIS NIGHT (An Exclusive Romance #1) holds nothing back when it comes to the intense relationships that can evolve between reporters and their photographers, but it also takes the time to develop the character’s love affairs and home lives. It’s a sexy read and it was a genuine thrill to have Mari take the time to call in with us. Mari started by telling us how JUST THIS NIGHT was one of the first books she ever wrote, pulling exclusively from her experiences as a TV news producer. Ultimately the book needed more time to cook and landed in a virtual file cabinet where it hung out for twelve years. We often hear from authors about the manuscripts they keep under their beds, but for Mari, JUST THIS NIGHT actually had a chance of seeing the light. Having a news producer call in also afforded us the opportunity to ask questions about her favorite stories (she won…

Afternoon Tea with CA Szarek and Linda Bolton
Readers / March 14, 2016

Monthly teas are always a welcome event on Saturday to look forward to. Book chatter and meeting with friends can become the best day of the week. And enjoying a Chocolate Angel tea is the icing on the cake — no pun intended although the cake balls are delicious! In celebration of spring and Easter coming soon our dessert included a carrot cookie along with brownie and cake ball. Yummy! Our guests included C.A. Szarek who is in a new anthology out on March 7th – SHADES OF DESIRE 2, Sexier by the Dozen. Twelve titillating tales for naughtier nights and dreamier days. Chrissy writes romantic suspense, time travel and her favorite – fantasy. Author of two contemporary romances with a new one coming in July, Linda Bolton wowed us with behind the scenes scoop from a indie publisher. From covers to editing, Linda told us all. Unfortunately she didn’t get to scope out her male model for the cover in person but he’s different than any other guy in a suit and we all oohed over him! Linda’s current books available for purchase are INCANTATION and TAKE 2. From talk about favorite Easter candies‐Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs and Cadbury…

The Sporting Life: Romances With a Kick by Miranda Owen
Readers / February 7, 2016

A friend of mine recently told me that she didn’t read sports-themed romance because she wasn’t that interested in sports. I can respect that, but I don’t think being a sports fan is necessary in order to enjoy romances that revolve around some kind of sport. I don’t play or watch sports, but some of my favorite books involve athletes. In fact, one of the first contemporary romances I ever read was sports-themed. I first got into this sub-genre of contemporary romance by reading, and becoming enthralled by, Erin McCarthy’s Fast Track series. The Fast Track series centers on the world of stock car racing. Every one of the driver heroes in this series is to die for and each one is very different, except for their drive and commitment. In THE CHASE, Erin McCarthy puts a new spin on the series by featuring a female driver as the main character. The Fast Track series is seriously sexy but with Erin McCarthy’s trademark humor and snappy dialogue as delectable additions.
